Description
For sale is a 1985 300TD wagon, with the legendary OM617 engine.
The car runs on either regular diesel or filtered vegetable oil. It has been run on both diesel and WVO (mostly WVO) for about 40K miles now.
The interior is decent, but isn't perfect - it's a 30 year old car, after all. The exterior is also showing its age, but isn't terrible. The body does have rust in the rear passenger floorboard - but I believe this to be the result of something spilled in this area at some point, as the rest of the car is free of any significant rust.
The car has 310K miles on it, and ran great until a catastrophic oil leak killed the motor. The engine HAS been replaced, and the car ran fine on diesel after replacement. After filling the tank with veggie oil, though, the car runs very poorly and lacks power. As it sits, it will need to be towed. I suspect an issue in the fuel injection system, either clogged injectors or an issue with the injection pump, which were replaced with the motor. I've been meaning to diagnose it, but have just not had the time - too many projects.
Winning bidder will also receive the old complete OM617, including turbo and manifolds, that came out of it, which includes the old fuel injection pump and injectors. With a set of bearings and gaskets, it should run just fine again if the new owner would like to resell the spare motor. As mentioned, this fuel system ran flawlessly on both WVO and diesel for quite some time, so swapping this onto the current motor should make the car run well again.
Because the replacement motor that is in the car came from a W126 sedan, it does not include the mounting boss for the SLS pump. If desired, the cylinder head from the original motor (with SLS pump) can be swapped back on to the car to restore the rear self-leveling function. The car rides acceptably without the SLS functioning, surprisingly. I do have (and will include with sale) the W140 springs required to swap to a conventional rear suspension setup if the owner should so choose - all that is needed to perform this conversion (aside from the included springs) are a pair of readily available, inexpensive shocks.
The car has been sitting for a while, so condition of the battery is not guaranteed, but may be able to be revived with a trickle charger.
GA does not issue titles for cars of this age, so will be sold with a bill of sale and my registration card, which are the documents needed to take ownership of and register the car.
Car is sold as-is, where-is, and will need to be towed - no warranty expressed or implied. Please contact me with any questions before bidding if you have any further questions about the car.
