The following report is from the Head Technician at Mercedes-Benz of Southampton:S 350L CDI
Complaint.
Excessive smoke from exhaust most apparent under load,
Investigation.
Carried out inspection of engine oil level found to be low, (4 litres of oil used over the last 2500 miles), carried out short test no fault codes stored in reference to complaint, checked smooth running values using Star, values all within specification. Carried at compression check using Star, test failed due to too greater difference in speed between cylinders.
Carried out Mechanical compression check and leak off check found cylinders 3 and 2 low on compression and excessive leak off on both the same cylinders. (Cylinder number 3 has a 38% leak off and cylinder 2 has a 26% leak off). The leaked air can be felt through the oil filler cap and oil dip stick tube which indicates the air is leaking past the piston rings.
We also carried out a basic timing check as the engine had developed a slight knock/rattle on start up, we traced the cause of the noise on start up to the timing being out by 16-18 degrees, this was traced to a stretched timing chain,
Repairs advised.
Removal of right hand cylinder head to carry out inspection of cylinders 2 and 3. Replace timing chain and tensioner after checking all sprockets and guides.
Work Carried out
Removed both rocker covers, removed Alternator to gain access to tensioner, removed tensioner, replaced timing chain after inspection all the sprockets and not finding any excessive amounts of wear, checked and corrected timing, fitted new tensioner, refitted all removed parts and tested, engine, now starts without any rattles or knocks, engine still smokes excessively when under load due to the high leak off in cylinders 2 and 3.
