Description

Up for sale is my 1972 Mercury Cougar XR7. Black with Black leather interior. Engine and Transmission are NOT original. I purchased the Car in Sep 2008 in Reno NV. From the previous registrations it appears that I car start it's life in California from 1971 to 1996. From 1996 to 2005? unknown and from 2005 to 2008 in was in Idaho. The mileage was 33637.4 when I picked it up in 2008. I am assuming that the odometer has rolled over and the actual mileage was 133637. Since 2008 I have put on roughly 11000 miles on the car. Again the odometer states 44560 miles, but I believe it to be 144560 miles.
The Car is in pretty good shape for being 43 years old. Engine runs good, plenty of power, FMX transmission shifts well. The interior seats are in good shape, door panels are a little warped. The driver's side panel is showing some small cracks at the arm rest. Back seat is in great condition. Carpet has a little wear, but pretty good. There is and aftermarket dash cap on the top dash. There is also a small crack in the passenger lower corner of the dash. The headliner has two small tears. Glass is good, with the exception of the stone chip right in front of the driver view. With the exception of the clock and the low fuel light all other gauges work fine.
The body has a few minor rust spots (see photos), one small dent on the bottom of the passenger's front fender(right behind the bumper). Multiple door dings, and not sure if the paint is original, but around the truck area and roof line -the paint is showing it's age cracking (see photos). The vinyl roof is in great shape, However there are some rust bubbles popping up (see photos) Chrome is Ok, rear bumper has putting, front bumper has some rust on the bottom passenger side. floor boards and truck are solid. I put on used 14' Magnum 500 mags, back in 2008- they are not show quality and have a little rust on them. Tires are in good shape and have a lot of tread left on them.
This is the third 71-72 cougar that I have owned. In 2009 the car spun a bearing, I replaced the original engine with one out of my very rusty 72 cougar. The engine had rings, bearings, seals, heads, cam, lifters, oil pump distributor were done back in April 2005. The car is equipped with A/C but the compressor makes a lot of noise when you turn it on. (so not working). The good news the engine has a Edelbrock performer intake with a Edelbrock 600 carb, a mild cam-COMP cam CL32-221-3, Pertronix Igintor II conversion Kit, replaced the water pump this year, Rad was new in 2005. I have a flame thrower II coil, but I had issues supplying a strong enough current to get the car to start.
In 2014 the transmission was acting up so I switched it out this Spring, with a spare one from a 1973 Cleveland/ fmx tranny I had bought in 2009. when I bought the transmission the guy told me it had been rebuild (can't say for sure it was or wasn't) I did replace all the seals and transmission pump before it was installed this spring. Works well. according to the differential code on the car it has 2.75 gears in the open rear end. Using the socket method I believe it to a 9 inch rear end.
Parts I have replaced
2008 fuel tank, and sender unit (items were purchased in 2005 for my other cougar),
2009 Idler arm and lower ball joints, rim horn switch
2013 rear shocks, duel exhaust-engine all the way back (had flowmaster mufflers, but I did not like sound, so in 2014 switched to Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers), rear sway bar. New electric sequencer turn signal board.(works well)
2015 used transmission, water pump(flushed the rad at same time), new battery.
I have replace a few trim parts here and there. I still have some parts that I have not yet installed; that will come with the car. New headliner, rubber for around the rear window, passenger side window,(driver's already installed) quarter post seals, quarter panel windlace, and a used but in good shape XR7 emblem for the passenger side pillar, new screw set for the side mirrors and a few other smaller pieces. A set of well used XR7 hubcaps and all my documentation.
I have tried to give you folks a good idea of what kind of shape the car is in. It is 43 years old and will need paint down the road. I would like to keep the car, but with a wife, kids and home repairs, I don't get the time to drive the car let alone get a chance to work on it. I am a non- smoker and the car was always stored inside for the winters. For the Best Look at the car I took a video and put it on youtube the link is
