Description
MGA 1500 Coupe "Barn Find" FOR SALE
Titled as a 1958 (USA dealer sell date). The VIN # H_R14319542 has a 1956 build date of Aug/56, pre-production of the Sept/56 official first production VIN of 20671. The above VIN omits the second letter designation of "D" roadster or "M" Coupe [MG did not have a letter designation for Coupe until the MGA] . The coupe production was integrated onto the existing roadster assembly line and this coupe is believed to be one of a few that were put through the line to ready and troubleshoot any problems when production commenced in Sept/56.
The related verbal history when discovered, purchased and moved to Portland in 2007 was the coupe was a one owner Tucson, Arizona car from new. The earliest title certificate we have is Arizona dated, 1973 and reaffirmed by the state in 1975. A restoration in Tucson was started in the early '70s, with a full running chassis (drivetrain/suspension/engine & gearbox rebuilt) and some body panel work done. At that point the doors were closed and the lights turned off for almost 40 years ago.
We purchased and imported the car out of Portland (all border importation documents and duty paid etc) into Canada (Vancouver, BC) in 2009 as a "shop project". The coupe arrived here in pieces, complete minus front windshield//front lower valance [ since replaced with the purchase of new fiberglass unite] /door card upholstery/LHS wooden floor panel & one seat frame, with boxes of used extra parts: wiring harness, front calipers for disc brake conversion, misc brackets, head light units etc and new panel pieces (rockers/B pillars etc). We worked on the restoration until 2011, when we moved shop to a larger location and rolled it into the storage area to again sit in the dark, as time is dedicated to client restorations.
When we received the car, the body shell, fenders, alloy doors bonnet & boot panels were sent out for "granite" media blasting. Upon return the only sign of any rust damage on the shell was pin holing of the trunk floor. The alloy panels show no sign of electolasis between the alum. & the steel frames. the fenders have typical rust damage on the bottoms at the A&B pillars. The few minor dents on the body shell were taped out [no filler]. Stress cracks below the trunk were welded & dressed. The previous damage to the inner panel above the front valance repaired. the rocker areas & B pillar repairs were completed with the replacement panels. The shell & fenders were then primer sealed as well as the steel frames on the alloy panels, as seen in the photos.
The chassis and running gear are in need of redetailing. The engine was carefully oiled down, flushed, hand cranked, starter cranked for oil pressure & started. Compression check is good, as is the timing, oil pressure etc. It appears to have been properly mothballed when the restoration was abandoned.
