RUN DOWN ON THE EVO'S MR MODELS..
Thelatest generation of Mitsubishi’s multi-award winning Lancer EvolutionVIII MR FQ 340.
Dubbed the MR for‘Mitsubishi Racing’, it offers a host of revisions that enhance theEvo’s legendary driving dynamics.
In order to prove that lessreally is more, the MR. The introduction of an aluminium roof and sideimpact bars has saved 7.5kg and, more significantly, lowered the car’scentre of gravity.
UK cars will also be supplied with unique, lightweight, heat-treated alloy wheels produced for Mitsubishi by TeamDynamics. These wheels reduce the unsprung mass of the car by 3.2kg.
Thisattention to detail has helped maximise the potential of the newBilstein suspension, which delivers sharper responses and an improvedride quality. The mechanical revisions also complement the improvementsto Mitsubishi’s electronically-controlled four-wheel drive system (4WD),which incorporates Super AYC* (Active Yaw Control), ACD* (Active CentreDifferential) and Sport ABS* (anti-lock brakes).
Three versionof the MR FQ'S ARE FQ300, FQ320 AND THIS WHICH IS THE MR FQ340 (342bhp),which is capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in just 4.2sec.
Asyou’d expect from Mitsubishi, all Lancer Evolution’s sold through theofficial Ralliart network are covered by a 3-year Unlimited MileageWarranty, a 3-year Pan European Recovery Service and a 6-yearAnti-Corrosion Perforation Warranty.

Lancer Evolution VIII MR – In Detail
Unveiledat the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2003, the new ‘MR’ (MitsubishiRacing) represents a new chapter in the Lancer Evolution story. Acleverly constructed development process saw the engineers concentrateon fine-tuning the Evolution VIII package with a host of detailimprovements. The result is the finest expression yet of the Evophilosophy and a car that offers an unrivalled combination ofperformance, practicality and value.
Enhanced roadholding and driving pleasure
Lightweight technology
Mitsubishi’sRalliart engineers have such a passion for saving weight that it couldeasily be described as an obsession. The Evo VIII already benefited froman aluminium bonnet and a carbon-fibre rear wing, but with theintroduction of the MR, the dieting has been taken one stage further.Tasked with reducing the overall mass of the car without compromisingthe near perfect front/rear weight distribution, the engineersintroduced an aluminium roof and side impact bars. Together these partscontribute 7.5kg to an overall mass saving of 10kg, when compared withthe outgoing Evo VIII.
To maintain the structural rigidity of thesteel monocoque while introducing a lightweight roof the engineersreinforced key areas, such as the roof bow, with steel braces. They alsoused a novel combination of Self Piercing Rivets (SPR) and specialadhesive to bond the aluminium to the steel. The process reduced themass of the roof by 4kg but more significant than the outright figure,is the effect on the centre of gravity or roll moment. The aluminiumpanel has the same effect on the centre of gravity as lowering the roofby 50mm, resulting in a car that is more responsive to driver input.
UKcars have also been modified with the introduction of unique alloywheels. The lightweight, heat treated alloys are supplied by TeamDynamics, and are of the same design and construction as those used bythe British Touring Car Championship teams. The Team Dynamics wheels notonly look terrific, they also weigh 8.3kg, 0.8kg less than the originalfit Enkie wheels. The MR’s unsprung mass is therefore reduced by 3.2kg,which makes a major contribution to the Evo’s outstanding agility.
Sophisticated suspension system developed with Bilstein
TheMitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR features Bilstein shock absorbers, which were honed at the famous Nurburgring Nordschleiffe racing circuitin Germany. The new shocks are unique to the MR, and Mitsubishi Ralliartand Bilstein engineers worked together to ensure that they harmonisewith the front strut and multi-link rear suspension.
The use ofdifferent damping rates for the single-tube front and rear shocks, together with the shape optimisation of the rear bump stop, has led toimprovements in traction and roadholding. Vehicle stability is enhancedduring cornering or braking manoeuvres, and the revisions have also had abeneficial effect on the ride quality. Put simply, the MR is even more‘driveable’ than its predecessor.
Electronically-controlled 4WD system refined and updated
Inresponse to feedback from competition drivers, Ralliart engineers haveretuned the Lancer’s electronically controlled four-wheel drive system(4WD), so that it is even more pro-active. On the previous generationEvo VIII, the all-wheel control (AWC) unit gave priority to the SuperABS* system in order to stabilise the car under heavy braking. TheActive Centre Differential (ACD)* and Super Active Yaw Control* (AYC)modules were effectively disengaged.
But a competition driverdoes not just use the brakes to slow the vehicle – they will also employbrake power to alter the balance of a car and to prepare it for achange of trajectory. With this in mind, the AWC system on the MR hasbeen revised so that the driving force is still controlled actively, even when the Sports ABS is operational. Through a series of high-speedbends, for example, the system will continue to control the yaw momentof the car, even if the driver is applying braking force. The car’sagility and stability are both improved, and the car responds moreaccurately to steering input on the entry to a corner.
Thesubstitution of the steel clutch case for an aluminium unit has alsoreduced the mass of the Super AYC unit by 800 grams, while the use ofhigh-strength steel for the differential hypoid gears has raised itsfatigue strength by 20per cent.
Increased performance
Engine revisions boost mid- to high-rev power delivery
TheEvolution VIII MR uses Mitsubishi’s well-proven 1997cc 4-cylinder 4G63twin scroll turbo engine, but it has been extensively revised to provideincreased performance at medium and high engine speeds. Broader powerand torque bands are obtained above 4500rpm and the engine continues topull all the way to the rev limit, ensuring that the MR is an idealchoice for competition or track day use.
This increase in top-endperformance has been achieved with the introduction of a larger turbinenozzle and complementary revisions to the cam profile. Taken inisolation, these changes could have compromised the engine’s famous lowrev flexibility, but a series of other detail revisions ensure thatthese concerns are not realised. The turbocharger waste gate now employsa second solenoid to optimise the flow and the balance weight of thesilent shafts has been revised to make them lighter.
Customersdemanding the ultimate Evolution VIII MR, though, are offered theFQ-340. The FQ-340 builds on the FQ-320’s specification with asupplementary ECU, which is hard-wired to the car’s existing enginemanagement system and controls the ignition timing and air/fuel mixture. The FQ-320 and FQ-340 are covered by the same warranty package as therest of the Mitsubishi range.
Aesthetic enhancements
Exterior
Subtletrim enhancements characterise the appearance of the new MitsubishiLancer Evolution VIII MR. Matt-black headlamp and rear combination lampsurrounds highlight the cars sporting aspirations and complement theturquoise lenses in the new, projector-style low beam headlamps. Theoutboard faces of the carbon fibre rear wing are now finished in darkgrey and the exhaust tailpipe now boasts a mirror finish to highlightthe Evo’s quality appeal.
Four exterior body colours areavailable: Gun Metal Grey Mica; Cool Silver Metallic; Solid Red andWhite Solid (the traditional colour for competition models.) Each hasbeen chosen to complement the exterior trim detailing.
Interior
Theinterior styling of the Mitsubishi Evolution VIII MR reflects andenhances the purposeful aesthetics of the exterior. The simple, highquality and ergonomically efficient fascia of the original Evo VIII iscarried over into the MR, with a series of detail revisions.
MRmodels are differentiated by the introduction of carbon-finish dashboardornamentation and a simple black centre panel, which highlights thecar’s function-orientated design ethos. The floor-console is alsodistinguished by a UK designed individual numbers identification badgewhich also includes the “Lancer Evolution MR” emblem.
A Momosteering wheel and Recaro seats are both signature Evo features andcontribute to a perfect, sports driving position. But while theirperformance is familiar, they have undergone subtle aesthetic revisions. The three-spoke Momo ’wheel now boasts matt black spokes and adark-titanium centre ring, which complements the revised styling of thefascia. The Recaro front seats, by contrast, are finished in a blacksuede-look non-slip material, with the exception of the shouldersupports, which feature a high-grip dimple-effect finish that providesthe maximum levels of support during hard cornering.
Although theLancer Evolution is a self-conscious performance car, it is alsopractical and well equipped. The boot offers a generous capacity of530litres and the cabin can seat five adults in considerable comfort. All MR variants also boast climate control, all-round electric windowsand electrically adjustable mirrors, a category 1 alarm and fourairbags.
Lancer Evolution MR FQ-340 models enjoy an enhancedspecification. The Recaro seats come clothed in a mixture of high-gradeleather and Alcantara, which highlights the Lancer’s premium appealwhile still offering excellent support.
