Introduction
Developed from the nine incarnations of legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR models before it (from 1992 - present day), the ‘Evo X’ is a bold, fresh and complete re-design, using an entirely new platform (based on Mitsubishi’s ‘Project Global’ platform). It’s the most advanced Lancer Evolution to date.
The radically re-designed Evo X offers greater thrills, excitement, performance, handling, safety, styling, economy and motorsport pedigree than ever before and provides the very highest levels of driving pleasure to match its mighty performance and technical specification.
Taking the more challenging route of a clean slate approach, Mitsubishi Motors has created an all-new car – inside and out – fit for tomorrow’s market, more mature, more stylish, definitely more sophisticated, and more competent than ever. For the first time there is a hint of some established European brands in the Lancer Evolution X.
Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, Lance Bradley, has hailed the Lancer range as a ‘revolution’ for the marque, with its sporty styling, keen pricing and motor sports ‘halo.’
“The Lancer Evolution X GSR FQ-360 is the pinnacle of Mitsubishi engineering – offering stunning performance, outstanding levels of grip, fabulous looks, an incredible well-spec’ed interior and supercar levels of pace and handling ability. The latest Evo X offers the very best technology and environmental responsibility blend in the Lancer Evolution’s esteemed, motorsport pedigree history. It’s an incredible car – guaranteed to satisfy performance car enthusiasts, with its exciting driving experience.
“The new Lancer Evolution X takes a huge leap forward in overall capability with significant gains in handling, dynamics, comfort and technology. At the same time, the driver still gets the kind of thrilling turbo engine performance that has made the model a legend around the world.”
The Lancer Evolution X GSR, built in the Mizushima plant in Japan, is now powered by an all-new, stronger, lighter all-aluminium two-litre turbocharged and intercooled MIVEC engine – available in 295PS FQ-300, 329PS FQ-330, and 359PS FQ-360 forms
And the new breed, most sophisticated, most involving and most technologically-advanced Evo to date comes with two transmission options: The FQ-300 and FQ-330 have a light, compact, speedy six-speed Twin-Clutch Sport Shift Transmission (TC-SST), and there is a perfectly-matched, slick action five-speed manual for the range-topping FQ-360, for the ultimate Evo X driving experience.
Naturally, the Evo X still retains a developed version of the much-heralded Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) four-wheel drive system, giving it class-leading levels of grip in the dry, wet and even snow and on gravel, proving its rally roots.
The Evo X brings together the best of Mitsubishi Motors, including:
• Thorough Project Global engineering
• Peerless Japanese reliability

• Impeccable racing credentials
Engine
The 4B11 uses a die-cast aluminium block to reduce weight, strengthened to withstand the stress of high-output operation and utilising a ladder frame structure to reduce noise, vibration and harshness. Designed to be inherently smooth running, it negates the need for secondary balancer shafts, which also contributes to weight reduction and allows the engine to be more compact. Furthermore, the 4B11 uses a forward facing intake and rearward facing exhaust ports. This change eliminated the need to run the exhaust pipe under the engine, allowing it to be lowered by 10 mm and contributing to the vehicle's lower centre of gravity.
Improvements in fuel economy have been achieved through utilizing an improved MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control) system, which now operates on the exhaust as well as the intake valves. Furthermore, the camshaft lobs now activate the valves directly instead of via rocker arms for improved accuracy and reliability.
Using an optimally-shaped titanium turbine wheel in the turbocharger in conjunction with a straight type intake system and large diameter exhaust system piping, response times are up to 18 per cent better even than those in the Lancer Evolution IX, making the Evo X the quickest to date.
Transmission
Manual gearshift models (FQ-360) are equipped with a mechanically direct, five-speed transmission, featuring Teflon-coated shift cables for super smooth changes, for the ultimate Evo X driving experience.
Environment
Evo X models feature Mitsubishi’s “Intelligent Motion” Technology including: Gear shift indicator, aluminium roof, electric power steering, fuel efficient/low rolling resistance tyres, regenerative brakes (Generation Control System), advanced aerodynamics, low viscosity oil, LED lighting and weight reduction measures, all contributing to the Lancer Evolution X’s emissions and fuel economy.
Extensive use of plant resins (not plastic) in construction.
Large % of the Lancer Evolution X is recyclable.
Safety
Excellent safety equipment and credentials throughout.
The Lancer Evolution X features Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) energy dispersion crash safety structure and has targeted a five star rating in the Euro NCAP tests. Further improving safety, all Lancer Evolution X’s come with “girdle reinforcement occupant survival cages” built into the body, whiplash reducing seats, six airbags, ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, an evolved version of the M-ASTC Active Stability and Traction Control system, Emergency Stop signal System and ISOFIX anchors for child seats.

Design and Aerodynamics
The Lancer Evolution X started as the brainchild of Mitsubishi Design Europe’s (MDE) talented design team. Masaki Matsuhara, head of the studio, recalls this genesis:
“The new Lancer Evolution is now both a reality and our company’s flagship. During the years I was in charge of it, we stayed loyal to the following three aims:
- First we had to improve functionality, so we pushed back the boundaries in all areas, lengthening the wheelbase for greater stability, lowering the centre of gravity and widening the track. In the meantime we also reduced the front and rear overhangs to make the car more manoeuvrable both at speed and in town.
- The second aim was to create an optimal shape while taking the Lancer Evolution’s aerodynamics to a new level. For the exterior, in particular, our engineers completed an exhaustive wind tunnel test programme.
- The third aim was to give the car a design that appeals to the customer, the toughest task of all for any designer. But we believe there can be real beauty in a shape designed to be functional and if that design is executed with real skill and emotion, it will possess the power to ignite passion in those that see it.
Now that development is finished, we the designers are confident that the Lancer Evolution X is a fitting flagship for Mitsubishi. Please go and see it in real life. Then feel it, sense it. You will not be disappointed.”
At the ‘Jet Fighter’ front, large air intakes ensure the engine receives the cooling it needs, whilst the whole front bumper is styled to decrease drag and lift. Underneath the car, air is channeled by diffusers to increase downforce and therefore grip and stability at high speeds. While, at the back, the substantial, classic Evo rear spoiler plays an important part in maintaining the car’s aerodynamic balance and handling consistency at all speeds. Wing blisters transport the side air streams rearwards without separation – whilst such distinctive styling features as the trapezoidal grille, the NACA duct on the hood and the kick-up shape of the front part of the wheel-arch are all designed for optimum cooling.
The Evo X’s look is not just for show… it’s first class aerodynamic design, born out of motorsport, for the road and track.
Interior trim: Introduction
The full bucket front seats are designed by Recaro as much for comfort as support, alleviating the sense of constriction often encountered in sports seats and improving access. Even the covering materials – a suede-like knit, or in FQ-360 models a combination of leather and techno-suede leather – have been developed specifically for their comfort and grip, whether on the road or circuit.
Essential driver information is displayed on a screen positioned between the main dials. The information displayed changes each time the INFO button, located on the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel, is pressed, showing mpg, tank range, outside temperature and other such useful driver aids.
A windscreen-mounted sensor detects moisture on the glass and activates the wipers automatically, whilst an optical sensor switches the head and tail lamps on and off depending on the outside light level.
Lancer Evolution X’s sophisticated Bluetooth system with built-in noise and echo cancellation ensures excellent audibility. Up to seven different phones can be paired to the system at any time and are automatically recognized upon starting the vehicle. Pick-up, hand-up, speech and volume controls are sited on the steering wheel whilst all other commands may be made verbally.
Remote audio control and Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone control are positioned on the steering wheel for easy operation. The Mitsubishi Multi Communication System incorporates a 30-gigabyte Hard Disk Drive satellite navigation system with colour touch-screen display, which is exceptionally fast and intelligent, providing ultra-quick search and route finding capabilities. It also features: Radio, DVD drive and CDDB which relays information about the CD being played to the screen as well as a hard disk-driven music catcher which can download and store up to 2,000 music tracks.
8-channel, 650w audio system designed by Rockford Acoustic Design (GSR variants) provides truly superior sound. A digital sound processor enables you to create the optimum acoustic characteristics to match your sound source and personal preference, providing a choice of four acoustic fields and five sound types. Nine speakers, including a 25 cm subwoofer, are housed in seven optimum locations.
Premium Sound System
The system of choice is the new premium sound system specifically designed for the Mitsubishi Lancer family by Rockford Corporation and offered under the Rockford Fosgate‘ brand, in parallel to a more traditional unit.
In detail:
650W High Power Amplifier
• The 8-channel amp pumps out a total of 650W of distortion-free power to deliver superior levels of audio quality.
• 25cm Subwoofer In A 20-Litre Enclosure.
• The system has a 25cm dual voice coil subwoofer in the left side of the luggage compartment. A 20-litre sealed enclosure, designed specifically for Lancer, extracts the full potential of the subwoofer for clear, full-bodied, heavy-bass sound reproduction.
9 Speakers in 7 Positions
• The system uses a total of nine speakers in seven locations. The speakers use materials best matched to their particular location and are optimally laid out to create the ideal sound field space.
Digital Sound Processor
• The premium sound system allows the listener to create the optimum field and acoustic characteristics to match the sound source and their preferences.
• It is acoustically tuned using a parametric equaliser that compensates for Lancer’s particular acoustic characteristics to produce smooth frequency characteristics. It also has a time alignment system to produce stable image phasing, compensating for time delays due to the differences in the distance between speaker and listener.
• Lastly, the system provides the choice between four acoustic fields – normal, stage, live and hall – and five sound types – classic, jazz, pop, rock and hip-hop.
Vehicle Speed Quality Compensation
Because road and wind noise increase with vehicle speed and make it difficult to achieve the same sound quality as when the vehicle is stationary, the Lancer Evolution X’s premium sound system uses vehicle speed-dependent sound quality and volume compensation to deliver the same high quality sound when the vehicle is moving as when it is stopped.
Speaker Box Doors and Deadening
To extract every decibel from the system, the Lancer Evolution X uses sheet panel, ABS plastic covers and sound-absorbing material to seal the door openings and turn the doors into speaker boxes. The doors have also been stiffened to deaden unwanted vibration. The result is distortion-free, clear sound with crisp notes and rapid decay.
Exclusive Tweeter Cover
The premium sound system uses a punched mesh tweeter grille that provides a larger area than conventional plastic covers. The wafer thin grille covers a larger diagonal area, which extends the listening arc and realises clearer treble range reproduction.
Satellite Navigation
In addition to this outstanding sound system, the Lancer Evolution X also offers the following high tech satellite and entertainment systems:
Hard Disk Drive (HDD) 7-Inch LCD Monitor On-Board Navigation
The Mitsubishi Multi-Communication System (MMCS) integrates audio, on-board navigation and other communication systems. The system uses a 30 GB hard disk drive and 7-inch LCD display with touch-panel operation. The main unit is slightly wider than 2DIN size for easier operation of the controls.
The navigation system utilises hard disk drive capacity to the maximum and uses dedicated LSI circuitry to provide ultra-fast search and access to 3D city maps, 3D polygon landmarks, detailed maps, photographs of sightseeing spots and other data-rich navigational content.
MMCS delivers in-car entertainment with AM/FM receiver and DVD player that supports CD, CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-video formats. It also features a digital music server with instant music access and CD Database (CDDB), automatic CD identification and supports MP3 and WMA formats.
With a 140W DSP amplifier and six speakers, this system really hits the notes.
Instrument cluster and Multi-Information Display
Using a large dot-matrix LCD screen with red graphics, the Multi-Information Display (MID) displays all the information the driver needs. In addition, the screen supports six different languages in Japanese, English, German, French, Spanish and Italian.
It displays:
• Trip distance and odometers.
• Service reminder that shows the number of months or distance to the next service.
• Water temperature.
• Range on remaining fuel.
• Fuel consumption.
• Average vehicle speed.
• Outside temperature.
• Seatbelt reminder.
The driver can change the display using the information mode switch located to the right of the instrument cluster.
Bluetooth™-Enabled Hands-Free Phone Kit
Available from factory, this hands-free kit is completely integrated into the audio or the MMCS unit. Operated via steering wheel-mounted switches (pick-up, hang-up and activate voice control) and making use of the vehicle’s speakers and integrated microphone in the front dome light, it is monitored via voice control.
This very advanced voice control works in five languages (German, English, French, Italian and Spanish) and can be optimised to suit one person per language by speaker enrolment function/voice training to have the best possible voice recognition.
Up to seven phones can be paired to the unit with a priority setting. The system can also store phone numbers and names (32 names in total and 4 numbers per name). The display will also show the number of the incoming phone.
In case there is an incoming call when the audio unit is switched off, the unit will come on, make the call via the vehicle speakers, hang-up and the audio will switch off again.
When fitted, MMCS comes with an integrated touch-screen key pad to dial numbers.
Auto-Light Control And Rain-Sensitive Auto Wipers
The auto-light control and rain-sensitive auto wipers contribute to the active safety of the driver by freeing them of the hassle of operating the light and wiper controls so they can concentrate on driving.
– Auto-light control: Together with a perimeter light sensor, Lancer uses a sensor to monitor the intensity of light ahead of the vehicle. It can distinguish whether the vehicle is passing under a bridge or through a tunnel, thereby preventing unnecessary activation of the headlights.
– Rain-sensitive auto wipers: The system scans the windscreen for rain droplets and automatically regulates the wipe interval according to rain intensity. The driver can adjust the sensitivity of the sensor to suit their driving environment.
Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS)
The high intensity discharge headlights are fitted with a new adaptive front lighting system that increases the driver’s field of vision to make night driving safer.
When driving along winding roads, for example, fixed auxiliary lights switch on when the steering wheel is turned so lighting up the inside corner and increasing the area of road illuminated.
Fully Automatic Climate Control with Air Filter
A fully automatic climate control can be offered featuring a filter which removes pollen, dust and other impurities and keeps the interior clean. Separate heater vents in the rear compartment allow rear seat occupants to control air from the heater.
Solar Control Glass
Solar control glass uses an infrared absorbing material in its intermediate layer to reduce transmission of solar heat by 66-100% (depending on glasshouse location). The glass also cuts out transmission of ultra-violet light but transmits all visible light to keep the interior airy and light.
Electronic Total Automobile Control System (ETACS)
You can individually set-up the vehicle to your own personal requirements with Project Global’s ETACS electronic architecture. This is Mitsubishi’s proprietary cross-carline integrated control computer available in all EU-spec Mitsubishi cars, and enhanced for the Lancer and all other Project Global vehicles.
This high-value system is very flexible and aimed at activating a host of safety and comfort features – all built-in and available at no extra cost. It allows for any vehicle to be customised according to the customer’s needs through the touch screen of the Mitsubishi’s Multi Communication System, either at the dealership through MUT III Diagnostics (Multi-Use Tester) or intuitively by the customer.
You can decide how long the interior light stays on after door closure, if at all. You can decide when the wing mirrors fold in and out – at the touch of a button, or automatically when the door is closed and the ignition key inserted or removed? You choose.
Furthermore, additional new functions can be integrated to improve vehicle usability, including:
• Wipers: e.g. intermittent operation, wipers and washer, rear wiper functions
• Exterior and interior lights: e.g. headlight auto-cut, auto-light sensitivity, dome light time
• Power windows: e.g. function after ignition off, passenger window position prohibited by lock-switch
• Turn signal, door locks, mirror folding and ACC power cut
• Exterior lights: e.g. auto-off function of front and rear fog lights
Engines and performance/economy
Mitsubishi’s legendary 4G63 4-cylinder 2-litre turbocharged engine powered successive generations of Lancer Evolutions all the way through to the IX. As that chapter closes, the new lightweight 4B11 DOHC MIVEC turbocharged engine takes on the mantle, powering the all-new Lancer Evolution X. Efforts focused on creating a high output engine that returned competitive fuel economy with cleaner emissions and that would be highly competitive in the motor sports arena.
The 4B11 DOHC MIVEC turbocharged engine edges past its 4G63 predecessor with a significant improvement in response:
• Compared to the 4G63 it replaces, the new power unit develops more power: 217 kW (295 PS) @ 6500 rpm and 407 Nm (FQ-300 and even more with Janspeed/Mitsubishi upgrades to FQ-330 and FQ-360), and is also tuned to generate more torque at lower engine speeds. Together with a revision of the gear ratios this gives the car outstanding motive performance.
• A major feature of the new engine is that it uses a die-cast aluminium cylinder block which realises a reduction of 12 kg in weight over a similar engine with a cast iron block.
• Another difference is in the layout of the intake and exhaust ports. The 4B11 now uses a forward facing intake and rearward facing exhaust ports. This has eliminated the need to run the exhaust pipe under the engine, allowing the engine to be lowered by 10mm and contributing to a lower centre of gravity.
Cylinder Block
• The die-cast aluminium block uses cast iron cylinder sleeves with bore and stroke both measuring 86.0 mm.
Installed in the block is a non-resonant knock sensor that realises more accurate knock control than the resonant
type sensor used in the 4G63 engine.
• The engine uses full floating pistons made by Mahle, renowned in F1 and other motor sports arenas. Made of a very hard and strong alloy the pistons are well able to handle the higher loads encountered in racing.
Cylinder head
• The cylinder head is also made of cast aluminium and uses MIVEC continuous variable valve lift and timing technology on both intake and exhaust camshafts. The switch to direct valve actuation makes for a simpler valve-train than those employing rocker arms to drive the valves, and results in a weight reduction of over 1 kg.
• The application of MIVEC technology to both intake and exhaust camshafts in the 4B11 engine instead of only to the intake camshaft (as in its predecessor) allows valve timing and lift to be optimised for engine speed and load, and contributes to higher power output and lower fuel consumption.
• Each cylinder is provided with its own ignition coil, guaranteeing powerful ignition energy. The use of M12 long-reach iridium spark plugs allows the use of larger cooling jacket chambers for improved cooling performance, more stable combustion characteristics and improved reliability.
• The cylinder head and block employ segregated cooling systems with individual water jackets for each cylinder, resulting in enhanced reliability. The system water pump uses the radiator fan shroud with integral plastic impeller design that has proven itself on the new Outlander.
• Weight and friction losses have been reduced with the use of a timing chain to drive the camshafts and by the elimination of the balancer shafts.
Intake And Exhaust Systems
• The Lancer Evolution X gets a new short port aluminium intake manifold with an electronically controlled throttle valve located upstream.
• The exhaust system uses a stainless steel manifold with an Inconel turbocharger located downstream. Optimisation of the compressor wheel has improved response by 18% over the Lancer Evolution IX.
• The routing system, by which the air compressed by the turbocharger is delivered to the intake manifold after being cooled by the intercooler, has been revised in order to reduce losses as far as possible.
• Further downstream, the system uses an exhaust pipe with significantly lower back pressure. The rearward exhaust manifold layout allows a significant shortening of the exhaust pipe. The new 65 mm diameter exhaust front pipe is 5 mm larger than on the former Lancer Evolution IX.
• The catalyst converter uses a high-performance metal catalyst. In the new design, the 21-litre main muffler is installed transversely and uses left and right tail pipes. The rearward exhaust manifold layout keeps the exhaust gas from cooling, particularly from a cold start, and gets the catalytic converter up to its working temperature more quickly to allow it to purge emissions sooner.
• The fact that the new model is able to attain this level of emissions despite the elimination of the exhaust gas recirculation system is evidence of the superior combustion control resulting from the new engine management system. Engine auxiliary equipment efficiency has also been addressed with the introduction of a new high-efficiency alternator.
5-Speed Manual Gearbox
For drivers who enjoy having more direct control over their machine, the FQ-360 GSR is available with a new 5-speed manual transmission.
Benefiting from all that Mitsubishi Motors has learnt in motor sports, the new manual gearbox features a greater torque capacity to handle the higher torque generated by the new turbocharged engine without growing in size. Torque capacity has been increased through the use of wider gear teeth.
First to fourth gears use close ratios. First gear uses a lower ratio than before for better standing acceleration. The new transmission uses multi-cone synchroniser rings on all gears for smoother shifting and a more positive shift feel, as well as for improved durability.
S-AWC: Super All Wheel Control
The Lancer Evolution X's AWC (All-Wheel Control) technology oversees the operation of the electronically-controlled on-demand 4WD, ABS and M-ASTC systems, providing an integrated approach to handling, traction and stability. A key component in the drivetrain is the electronic control coupling, which allows varying amounts of torque to be directed to the rear wheels depending on driving conditions and traction needs.
Super All Wheel Control is the collective name for a number of different electronic and mechanical devices which work together to create the phenomenal way the Lancer Evolution X responds to the driver; it can be tailored to best suit snow, gravel or tarmac surfaces at the flick of a switch. At the heart of the S-AWC lies an Active Centre Differential. Unlike a passive system it processes information to determine the optimal torque split between the front and rear axles and distributes it via a hydraulic multi-plate clutch. Active Yaw Control (AYC), unique amongst road-going cars, utilises an electronically controlled rear differential to take information about longitudinal and lateral acceleration, steering angle and wheel speed and apportions torque between the rear wheels according to need. Active Stability Control (ASC) regulates the engine power and braking force at each wheel to prevent a loss of control, so smoothly and swiftly that the driver is often unaware of its operation: it can be disabled partially or fully. The final link in the chain of control is, of course, Sports ABS.
The Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system of the new Lancer Evolution X incorporates and controls four advanced electronic and mechanical devices that work together to adapt the way the car responds to the driver and conditions. S-AWC works seamlessly to keep the power under control and can be tailored to snow, gravel or tarmac surfaces at the flick of a switch. It is no exaggeration to say that S-AWC is unrivalled by any other driver assistance system in existence.
WORKING TOGETHER IN PERFECT HARMONY
ACD: The Active Centre Differential, optimizing the torque differential between front and rear wheels to enhance steering response, traction and stability.
AYC: Active Yaw Control, optimizing the torque differential between the rear
wheels to enhance cornering, performance and traction.
ASC: Active Stability Control, immediately detects wheel slip and, by strategically
applying each individual brake according to need, prevents a loss of control developing.
ABS: The Lancer Evolution X’s Anti-lock Braking System works to prevent wheels from locking up under emergency braking or when braking in extreme situations.
Suspension: Introduction
Lancer Evolution X adopts a proven front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension layout, enhanced by world-renowned Bilstein shock absorbers (inverted at the front) and Eibach coil springs all round. Front and rear stabiliser bars, a front strut brace, extensive use of aluminium and rigid attachment to the car's structure ensure excellent on-road handling characteristics, improved ride comfort and very sure-footed cornering performance.
The Evo X benefits from McPherson strut suspension with inverted Bilstein shock absorbers, EIBACH springs and stabiliser bar up front, while the rear axle has multi link suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers, EIBACH springs and stabiliser bar.
Front Suspension
The Lancer Evolution X retains the MacPherson strut front suspension type of arrangement of its predecessor. While inheriting the inverted shock absorber and other expertise, nearly all component parts have been redesigned to raise the performance still further.
In developing the suspension system still further of this super car, suspension stiffness has been raised to the limit to handle the higher loads and inputs stemming from the wider track and the larger tyres. This has achieved the optimum balance between higher levels of cornering performance and handling stability, and improved ride comfort:
• One change that has significantly increased front lower control arm mounting stiffness is the addition of specially tailored reinforcements and reinforcing bars to the high-rigidity flat cross members, developed as part of the new Project Global’s Outlander and Lancer family.
• Cross-section optimisation of the strut upper insulators has increased stiffness and allows the system to handle the greater camber inputs accompanying the car’s improved cornering performance.
• Knuckle shape optimisation using CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) analysis has realised both a reduction in weight and the increase in stiffness required to handle higher road inputs. This, together with the use of larger hub unit bearings, has seen a 7% increase in camber stiffness and a 23% increase in lateral stiffness.
• In terms of the suspension geometry, the use of larger caster angles and caster trail gives a tighter steering feel in straight line driving with improved cornering performance.
• The elastic properties of the lower arm pillow ball bush have been tuned to further suppress road input-induced vibration and improve ride quality.
• The steering system has also been revamped to meet next generation requirements. The hydraulic assist system has been optimised to deliver steering that is direct but has a high quality, solid smooth feel to it.
Rear Suspension
The low mount multi-link arrangement rear suspension used up to the Lancer Evolution IX MR has been fully re-engineered. The basic arm configuration follows that of the multi-link arrangement on the previous model, but significant changes have been made to the positioning of the mounts and the arm layout to increase rigidity and tyre / surface contact:
• The well crib cross member, rigidly connected to the body at six points, has been structurally revised to form an extremely strong and stiff structure.
• The cross member is also used to support the rear differential, and positional optimisation of the bushings in the
3-point load bearing structure has reduced vibration and noise.
• The span between the pivots connecting the control arms to the well crib cross member has been extended, and both stiffness and durability have been significantly increased with the use of larger hub unit bearings.
• Pillow ball bushings are now used in the trailing arm body side pivot, the upper arm rear pivot and the lower arm pivot to realise significant increases in camber (56%)and toe stiffness (53%), and the smoother stroke realised gives improved surface compliance to allow the S-AWC vehicle dynamics control system to deliver its full potential.
• The wall of the bushing used on the aluminium control arms has been thickened at the insertion point for improved reliability under gruelling driving conditions.
Shock Absorbers And Springs
At the front, the Lancer Evolution X retains the inverted shock absorber that delivers superior response and lateral stiffness:
• Mounting the rear shock absorbers and springs on knuckles has reduced suspension leverage and raised stroke efficiency, providing a better stroke feel, improving surface compliance and giving a quality feel to the handling and ride.
• The use of non-linear springs and lengthening the rebound stroke has enhanced inner wheel tyre / surface contact when cornering and has produced a more pliant stroke feel.
Chassis Packages
• GSR comes standard with high performance 245/40R18 tyres with stiffer walls and better grip on 18-inch Enkei
12-spoke alloy wheels. The Brembo 2-piece 350 mm front / 330 mm rear ventilated disc brakes save 1.3 kg at each wheel and the increased disc size compared to the Lancer Evolution IX improves stopping power, fade resistance
as well as brake pedal feel.
• In the UK, Bilstein single tube shock absorbers and Eibach coil springs are also a standard feature.
Brakes
Massive Brembo brakes with 350mm ventilated discs with four piston calipers at the front and 330mm items at the rear offer huge stopping power even before electronic safety measures like Sport ABS and EBD need be triggered. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) makes sure that each wheel has the maximum possible braking power available at all times.
Wheels and tyres
The Lancer Evolution GSR model range comes with lightweight, forged Enkei 18" x 8.5J alloy wheels, designed to reduce unsprung weight – aiding handling and ride. They come wrapped in 245/40R18 sports performance tyres, for maximum grip – whatever the weather, or driving environment.
Safety
To keep occupants safe in the event of a collision, Lancer Evolution X comes with a 7-airbag system to provide protection from all sides. Curtain airbags extending along both sides protect front and 2nd-row occupants in a side collision, while the 1st-row occupants are additionally protected by front and side airbags with a knee airbag for the driver.
The Evo X also comes with the following safety features:
• Four-wheel-drive with Active Yaw Control (AYC).
• Active Stability Control (M-ASTC).
• Traction Control (M-ASTC).
• ABS.
• Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD).
• Brake Assist.
• Emergency Stop System.
• Up to 6 airbags (incl. driver knee airbag).
• ISOFIX child seat anchorage.
Should an accident be unavoidable, the Lancer Evolution X’s body has been designed using Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) philosophy. It features high tensile steel strengthening in key body areas and provides energy dissipation paths for collision forces and low weight, should an impact occur. The Lancer Evolution X’s brake pedal is designed to reduce protrusion, while whiplash-reducing seating limits backwards movement of the head and neck in the event of rear collisions.
It’s not just its occupants the Lancer Evolution X helps protect, but pedestrians too. All models feature a double bulge bonnet design with a crushable zone for pedestrians, plastic front wings and an energy-absorbing front bumper, which incorporates leg injury mitigation measures. The Lancer Evolution X is safe – but not at the expense of others.
