Description
1947 NASH HAUL-THRIFT MODEL 3148 1.5 TON FLATBED TRUCKif you didn't know or think Nash ever built trucks, THEY DID, but not very many of them. This particular truck is one of only 32 Nash trucks in the Nash Registry. The engine was rebuilt 29 years ago and the truck was dissembled and repainted 26 years ago and currently shows 26,180 believed to be original miles, though the speedometer currently isn't working. The truck has just been awakened from a long-term hibernation. We replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the fuel tank, flushed the fuel lines, installed a new 6-volt electric fuel pump and installed a new battery. The truck started right up! The truck presently starts, runs, drives and stops nicely, though we've only driven it on our large parking lot.
Here's a chance to own an EXTREMELY RARE piece of American truck-building history. Nash was known for building high-quality cars, but most folks don't realize the also built a few trucks in the post-war eramost were built for the export market and a few for their network of Nash dealers for their use as parts runners and wreckers. They even built a few proto-type light-duty pickups. All of their trucks were based on the 1946-1948 Nash car design with a much stouter 1.5-ton chassis underneath. This makes for a much more opulently-appointed truck than what was common of the era. This truck is a fine example of the few remaining Nash trucks known to exist that were built between 1947 and 1954.
MECHANICAL
234.8 cid inline 6-cylinder overhead valve engine -- runs nicely, quietly with no knocks, ticks or smoke. The engine is designed to produce 104 bhp and 195 lb/ft of torque. The engine is backed by a 4-speed manual transmission that shifts nicely and makes no noises. The brakes (Lockheed front/Timken rear) stop the truck with straightforward confidence for a 67-year-old truck. The truck steers nicely with no slop with its original Ross cam & twin-lever steering box.
COSMETIC
The truck was repainted some 26 years ago and it shows some minor patina from years of storage and minor usage. We recently removed the large west-coast style door mounted mirrors so there are some mounting holes in the doors that will need to be filled or the mirrors reinstalled (they come with the truck). The interior is nice for the age of the restoration with minor wear indicated on the seat and some patina in the machined finish on the dashboard.
FUNCTIONAL
The truck runs and drives nicely. The vacuum-powered wipers will need the motor rebuilt as they are inoperable at present. The speedometer doesn't work and we haven't diagnosed the issue which may be as simple as reattaching or replacing the cable. All other gauges appear to work properly. The truck starts easily as the starter is powered by a auxiliary 12-volt battery mounted in the under-bed tool storage compartment. All of the truck electrics are powered by the correct under-seat 6-volt battery. I believe the truck would still start easily with the 6-volt battery reconnected to the starter, but haven't tried this yet.
