Description
1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 W-30 Convertible Recreation painted in beautiful Viking Blue being sold with "No Reserve"
This was your Father's Oldsmobile if he was the Cool Dad on the block. 442 stands for 4-speed/4-barrel/Dual Exhaust! This Cutlass Supreme Convertible was simply made to look like an awesome 442 W-30 specimen.
If you simply double click on the main picture of the auction page then all 24 pictures will be able to be viewed in the larger size by clicking the arrows on each side of the larger pictures.
Opportunities like this don't come around very often. It is no great secret that the 1970 Cutlass/442 Convertible has more than doubled and even tripled in price over the last 10-15 years. A true 442 Convertible has a vin number that starts with 344 to prove it is a real 442. That is the way to verify these cars came from the factory ordered as a genuine 442 convertible. The vin number on this car starts with 342 to prove it was originally ordered as a Cutlass Supreme Convertible. 1970 has proven to be one of the most expensive and highly sought after years to acquire from the pinnacle of the muscle car era.
There simply are not that many left in existence. The more natural disasters that happen the more of these beautiful works of art are just eliminated, and the chances of owning one gets slimmer and slimmer. As shown in the engine pictures the ram-air cleaner does work properly while this Rocket engine is running. When the accelerator is pressed is when the flapper door opens up to draw more air into the carburetor that they say increases the horsepower by 10% percent.
I took this Viking Blue Beauty over to the Kenosha courthouse right after the verdict came in and showed the best picture I could find on the news. Everyone who saw the car said how spectacular it is. I didn't want any damage to occur, so I only made one pass around the block.
I have to say this Olds starts right up and runs beautifully. It steers nicely down the road with finger tip control. I tried to place all of the correct decals in the proper spots that came throughout the car from the factory before it hit the showroom floor back in 1970. I recently made this purchase from a gentleman whom I've known for over a decade. He has owned a body shop for over 30 years and just sold his shop, because he wants to buy a 1969 Mach 1 like his very first car. Since a 1969 Mach 1 was my first car, I could totally relate to him. He knew I have been a 442 guy for the past 40 years, so that was the reason he sought me out to make the purchase. I did pay a hefty amount for him to part with his pride and joy. I will explain everything he told me about this cool convertible prior to making the purchase.
This is a car that you can pretty much jump in and drive anywhere around the country with confidence. My friend took it from his home in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin where I made the purchase and drove it over 2 hours to Chicago and back this past summer. I went out to make the purchase and drove it 90 minutes to Kenosha and it drove like a dream. Therefore, In my opinion I feel confident with making the statement that this car can be driven anywhere. Although it would make a great addition to anyone's Man Cave just to look at and admire. This is one of the finest specimens I have ever purchased.
There were so many brand new items that were replaced on this car that I will try and do my best to explain everything I was told, but this is basically very close to buying a brand new 1970. I became close friends with this gentleman over the years and he asked my advice what to do many times over the past decade while he was restoring it. He replaced all the rubber window sill moldings, all the rubber gaskets around the doors, and the rubber trunk seal. He always tried to find the best aftermarket replacements, or NOS original new old stock parts. He did this convertible as original as possible. Under the hood he had the heads redone and installed triple valve springs. He installed a high performance cam. He had the turbo 400 transmission completely rebuilt with a new torque converter. He came straight out and told me he would feel confident driving this car anywhere.
This is the numbers matching Rocket engine. I was told it was, but I double checked the numbers myself to make sure that is a factual statement. There are newer dual Flowmaster mufflers with the dual exhaust that makes this Rocket sound wicked to say the least. The tail pipes have the sweet chrome trumpet exhaust tips coming out on each side of the brand new cut-out rear bumper just like a true 442. Almost all of the chrome on this car is brand new old stock NOS or brand new replacement chrome. The rear-end is believed to be the original 12-bolt, but I am unsure of the gear ratio. He also added the cool W-27 aluminum rear end cover as shown in one of the pictures. He did replace the gas tank with a brand new gas tank and brand new gas tank straps. He replaced the windshield washer fluid container. He said the suspension was all completely replaced including brand new shocks and brand new springs on all four corners. There is a new power brake booster with a new master cylinder, and new proportioning valve for the power front disc brakes with all new brake lines, brake pads, calipers and rotors. The power steering pump is brand new along with all new power steering pump hoses. The Radiator was refurbished and brand new upper and lower radiator hoses were installed. All new belts were also installed at the same time with a brand new alternator. A brand new water pump and gaskets were installed. There is a brand new battery tray with a heavy duty Interstate battery and both negative and positive battery cables were installed.
The paint work was recently done by him in his paint booth in beautiful Code 26 Viking Blue. I've been told by everyone who sees this car that the paint work on this convertible looks spectacular. The only minor imperfection he said was when he was in a parking lot and he parked far away from everyone, but someone put a minor ding in the very front of the right front fender. Both of the front fenders he purchased were brand new NOS Genuine GM fenders. He said both doors were perfect with perfect seams all along the bottoms as shown in the pictures. The quarter panels were genuine GM replacement panels, and he was very meticulous to make sure all the panels and gaps lined up perfectly. These doors open and close like back in 1970. He had one of the nicest Genuine GM Ram-Air hoods I have ever seen on any of these cars with the original steel screen underneath, so it lines up perfectly on the car, and the chrome twistdowns latch with ease.
There will be endless compliments coming to whoever is the lucky winner of this rare classic. It was very hard to keep people away while I was just trying to shoot the pictures. The white stripes did come out tremendously. He said he used the GM W-30 stripe template kit just for the stripes and spent over two full days applying the stripes. The stripes are buried under the clear coat so they feel nice and smooth, and just like part of the paint. I challenge anyone to look around at the other 442's out there, and they will see stripes running uphill or downhill along with different thicknesses even on near 100-point show cars. My buddy took extreme pride in the paint work and the striping. It would be hard to find any stripes close to how nice the stripes look on this convertible.
The primary and secondary hood latches are all hooked up correctly like from the factory. This hood is a steel framed Genuine GM General Motors factory W-25 ram-air hood with the chrome twistdowns. I believe the 442 ram-air induction hood is the nicest looking hood on any muscle car bar none. If you have been searching for an investment quality muscle car that you can jump right in, and be proud to show up at your local car show then this elegant looking convertible may just have your name on it. There's nothing like driving down the road with the top down looking out at those bold stripes on the iconic dual snorkeled ram-air hood with a peek in the rear view mirror at the cool whale tail spoiler.
The carpeting is brand new from last year and was done at the same time the entire interior was replaced. There is also a new set of four black carpeted floor mats. The brand new Pearlescent bucket seat interior appears in very nice condition as shown in the pictures with all 5 pairs of the original seat belts like new in great working condition. The front bucket seats and the rear seats are all brand new, so they should be nice and comfortable for many many years to come. I must say this car is very comfortable to drive. A full family of five can enjoy going to see a movie at the local drive-in movie theater with pride. Even the chrome backing plates were replaced on each interior door panel arm rest with brand new Pearlescent arm rest pads. All four chrome window cranks were replaced with brand new ones. The door panels and the rear sides panels were also replaced with the correct brand new one year only 1970 burlwood woodgrain replacements. The wipers work on both speeds. The heater is hot and works on all three speeds. The dash board is in very nice shape with all new correct burlwood woodgrain also correct for 1970 only. The console with the cool dual gate "his and hers" shifter also has the new woodgrain panel in front of the shifter. The dash has an original AM/FM stereo radio that works and sounds well. This dash was never cut up to fit an aftermarket stereo. There is a brand new dash bezel that has the rally gauges on the left, and a 150 m.p.h. speedometer in the center with a tic-toc-tac on the right. He didn't know how to hook up the tachometer, but that's just a wire that needs to run through the firewall to the distributor. If the winning bidder would like me to include a regular 120 m.p.h. speedometer I would be happy to do so, but the 150 speedo does seem to be very accurate, and looks really cool so I left it in place.
The power convertible top is brand new with new padding, and new rubber gaskets, and a brand new well liner. He spent big money on having that top come out perfect. We had a nice day here two weeks ago in the 60's, so I was able to take the top down pictures. I never put a top down under 55 degrees, because that always avoids the chance at any damage. There is also a brand new Pearlescent California convertible top boot that sits attached to the strip behind the rear seat. I did not have time to attach it properly on the car due to losing daylight, but when the boot is installed when the top is down these cars look really incredible. That top boot placement over the top down inside the well takes about 10 minutes. The top did go up and down very nicely through the switch in the dash, and when it closed it fit like a glove and latched down with ease. This new white convertible top does have the brand new back glass option. All the top down fun can be had by the new owner if this Blue Beauty goes down south.
This Olds sits up just right on a set of four Cooper Cobra Radial GT P235/60R15 inch raised white lettered steel belted radial tires with nice tread mounted on the expensive all chrome 15" inch Super Stock I wheels. All four wheels have all four bolt-on center caps, and all chrome lug nuts. From everywhere I inspected the floors and the frame are in nice condition and the trunk floor looks to be in nice shape as well. The trunk floor was coated with A/C Delco black and aqua spatter spray and then properly clear coated to appear like it came out of the factory. There is a new trunk gasket with the new factory styled two piece trunk mat. There is a nicely restored jack, jack stand, bumper mount that still has the rubber on the bumper mount, and crow bar with the original rubber sleeve that attaches the crow bar to the jack. Those are usually long gone. Also included in the trunk is a full size Super Stock I spare wheel with a raised white lettered spare tire.
This Olds has the infamous ram-air hood, whale tail spoiler, tinted glass, power steering, power disc brakes, tilt wheel, bucket seats, console, dual gate shifter, one year only clam shell mirrors, AM/FM, and a power convertible top. This Olds is steered by the awesome four spoke 442 sport steering wheel. All of the interior lights work as they should. These cars really look sweet at night when the top is down and the door opens with all the interior lights lighting up. All four corning lights are brand new, and work as they should. All the tail lights, brake lights, and license plate lights work as they should. The 442 and W-30 emblems are all brand new. The 442 grilles are brand new, the head light backing plates are brand new, the head light buckets are brand new, the head light bezels are brand new, and all four low beam and high beam head lights are all brand new halogen lights and all work great. A tremendous amount of time, money, and effort went into making this classic into the best my buddy could make it. He claimed he had well over 1000 hours into making this convertible into what it is today, and he did all the work with a great deal of pride.
This Olds is being sold with a clean and clear title issued in my buddy's name from the State of Wisconsin. The actual mileage stated on the odometer reads on the title as not actual. I have no way to verify the mileage as original, although nowadays the mileage comes up exempt on a new change of ownership title in most states when a car is more than 10 years old. If the winning bidder would like the title placed in my name I can have that done the day after the sale. Title's are given on the spot at the Wisconsin DMV's.
Included in this sale is the original 1970 Oldsmobile owner's manual in near pristine condition including the consumer information pamphlet, and the super rare original Protect-O-Plate that comes inside the original dealer sleeve plastic envelope. In an ironic twist of fate this cars original owner lived only 2 or 3 blocks away from where I grew up in Skokie, Illinois. I knew virtually every car on almost every block in my home town growing up back then, and I never saw this convertible around town anywhere. The original owners had to have kept it stored in their garage for over 30 years and only used it on nice hot summer days. You won't find many around anywhere with these many options and in this condition. These older classics that have survived for nearly half a century are becoming harder and harder to find. Especially in one of the most attractive color combinations made.
The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has a genuine 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 Convertible listed at $258,500 in high condition, which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100-point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices.
Nada has the average condition value at $174,300 which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer!
They have the lowest condition valued at $125,700 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration.
The Nada numbers don't lie! This 1970 Convertible was just made to look like a W-30 Convertible, but only a keen eye would be able to recognize it is a recreation, and with all the valuable parts installed this is a very valuable classic. It would be very hard to find a classic muscle car of this magnitude without spending well over $60,000.
I know the Mecum Auction will be live in Kissimmee Florida from January 10th-16th. There is another gentleman I know that will be selling several of his private collection of 442's that should all be selling well over the 100K range. This is a chance to get the same looking, steering, and driving convertible at a reasonable price. Isn't it time to treat yourself for being the Great Man you've been all year and what Santa forgot to leave you under the tree?
Whatever this classic genuine 1970 Convertible sells for in this quick "No Reserve" 5-day auction is a win/win investment. I'm not saying this is a Barrett-Jackson show piece, but in my opinion it's not far off from that level. I'm selling this 1970 Cutlass/442 convertible as a nice daily driver type of classic vehicle. In my opinion I can't see any winning bidder not being very happy with their purchase.
This Oldsmobile is an investment that I believe will continue to rise as these Cutlass Supreme and 442's have consistently shown to escalate in value with each quarter. Here is a prime opportunity to acquire your dream car at a nominal price. I know this description is a little long winded, but I tried to list everything I could think of when the description was written, so every potential bidder can make the most informed decision prior to confidently placing their bid. If you feel anything may have been left out please ask as many questions as you like. I still use an old Blackberry cell phone, and do not have any internet access. Therefore I don't have that eBay mobile app, so please ask questions through your my eBay account.
This car is being offered at "No Reserve" on a quick 5-day listing. It will sell to the highest bidder on Sunday evening at 5:00pm Pacific, 7:00pm Central, or 8:00pm Eastern time depending on your location. I do have several contacts for shipping and would be more than happy to pass along those very reliable contacts. I hope everyone has a happy, healthy, and safe New Year's Day celebration. Please don't forget this auction ends the day after New Year's Day on January 2nd, 2022.
Thank You for taking the time to read and view this auction!!!
Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!!
