An investment-grade time capsule
Back in spring, 1984, Mr. and Mrs. Jensen spoke at length about purchasing a new Hurst Olds Cutlass. They loved the latest Cutlass body style and were thrilled to see Hurst Performance back modifying Cutlasses. After a four year absence, the 1983 Hurst Olds flew out of dealerships, so plans were made to continue a run of 3,500 cars for 1984. In a time when even the Camaro and Corvette were pretty boring, the '83 and '84 Hurst Olds cars caused quite a stir. These cars were HOT!
For the Jensens, the only requirement was the car had to have T-tops; they agreed to live with or without any other options. At the time, the Jensens lived on Washington Island, north of the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin, so a ferry ride & drive to the nearest Oldsmobile dealer in Green Bay was almost 3 hours away.
Mrs. Jensen kept in close contact with Broadway Oldsmobile, and was absolutely elated when Broadway called to say they had an '84 Hurst Olds WITH T-tops on their showroom floor! That Saturday, the Jensens made the trip down to Green Bay with their full size Blazer, hoping a deal could be struck on the Oldsmobile. Mr. Jensen recalled that it didn't take long to put the deal together, as other parties showed interest in the Hurst. The Jensens traded their Blazer that day and drove back together to Washington Island with their '84 Hurst Olds. This is car #1788 of 3500 built for 1984, and just 1 of 1500 with those coveted T-tops.
The Jensens intended to keep miles low (but not THIS low) on their Hurst, so Mr. Jensen was also mindful to keep all of his purchase paperwork for the car. The dealer stock number card stuck to the window, GMAC Financing paperwork, bill of sale, rustproofing receipts, and the window sticker were all kept in a folder. Those first few years, the Jensens enjoyed the car, and Mr. Jensen recalled driving it every month or so on sunny days. By 1990 or so, though, the car had just a few thousand miles on it, so the Jensens decided to limit how much they drove the car. By 2004, with just 4,500 miles on the odometer, the car was being driven a prescribed route a few times each season. Mr. Jensen had other collector cars and knew that letting the H/O sit would be terrible for it, so he made a conscious effort to find a balance between giving the car the exercise it needed, and keeping miles low.
The Jensens' effort paid off. Never have I driven a survivor car with so few miles that runs as well as this car does. It starts immediately, holds good idle, and drives like it should. Incredibly, in the 3 months we've had this car, it hasn't dripped a fluid, either. The care this car has been shown is obvious.
Mr. Jensen and I took inventory of what has been replaced on the Hurst Olds, and came up with this list: the battery, oil filter, and air filter. He and I believe everything else to be original to the car.
The car glows in person like it shows in the photos and videos. The paint is free of any lacquer checking, as the car has been stored indoors, under a cover, its entire life. As shown in the videos, there are a couple touch-ups and light marks in the paint, but I'm sincerely being REALLY nit-picky. The car is stunning. Inside, the only flaw is the sagging headliner, shown in the photos and video, and very, very light wear on the driver's floor mat. It still smells new inside. Under the hood and underneath, the car is full of original marks, date codes, tags, and decals rarely seen on cars that get driven any length of time. The car has been incredibly well preserved.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have that I can answer. My name is Jeff and I can be reached at 608-401-1113.
