Description

Description
This beautifully kept 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible appears to be in excellent immaculate condition inside and out, featuring Matador Red paint and Strato Bucket Seats upholstered in white vinyl. Under the hood, a 455-cu.in. V-8 powers this personal luxury convertible, and is mated to a Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 three-speed automatic transmission with a floor-mounted shifter. It has only 60,000 miles since new.
ENGINE
The engine bay is exceptionally well detailed on this Oldsmobile, with the correct satin black finish on the inner fenders, firewall and radiator cowl to go along with the correct Oldsmobile Blue finish on the engine bock, intake manifold and valve covers. The fifth character of the VIN "K" indicates this Oldsmobile was originally equipped with an Oldsmobile four-barrel 350-cu.in. V-8, rated at 180 horsepower in 1972. Presently, a Rocket 455-cu.in. V-8 resides in the extra-clean engine bay. In 1972, Oldsmobile rated the L75 version of the 455 at 270 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque in the Cutlass Supreme Convertible. The engine starts and runs easily, with no smoke from the exhaust and no leaks from the valve covers or oil pan.
TRANSMISSION
This Cutlass Convertible features the Turbo HydraMatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission, with a floor-mounted console shifter. That shifter has the federally mandated PRND configuration, with the Oldsmobile exclusive "S" position before the Low range selection, for Super Drive, which was to be utilized for passing, climbing and engine braking downhill. Conservatively rated for 450 lb-ft of torque, the THM400 is an overbuilt transmission, easily suited to the rigors of transmitting power from a 455-cu.in. V-8. It has a 2.48:1 ratio in first gear, 1.48:1 in second, and a 1:1 direct-drive ratio in third.
STEERING, SUSPENSION AND BRAKES
Though all but universal today, power steering was an option on this Cutlass Supreme in 1972. Thankfully, most people ticked that box, as did the original owner of this '72 Cutlass Convertible. The suspension is standard GM A-body issue independent front and four-link live rear axle, and the seller notes that the shocks, bushings and components are all in excellent condition. Power brakes and front discs were still an option in 1972, and, again, the original purchaser of this Cutlass opted for both. According to the seller, the brakes are well up to the task of stopping this droptop Olds. Tires are Primewell Sport PS860s, sized 225/70R14, wrapped around Oldsmobile Super Stock I wheels in excellent condition, with trim rings and center caps.
EXTERIOR
According to the trim tag, this Oldsmobile Cutlass has a paint code of 14, which would've been Silver Pewter in 1972. The Trim code (B) suggests that the top may have originally been black. Today it wears a carefully and properly applied coat of Matador Red; even the door jambs and trunk were all appropriately finished in the arresting new color. The black top was replaced with a more attractive white convertible top, and it appears to fit tightly and seals out wind noise and rain. The paint is currently in outstanding condition, with no blemishes or chips reported by the seller. The chrome and exterior trim sparkles in the sunlight, and the glass is all in perfect condition.
INTERIOR
Inside, this 1972 Cutlass Convertible is in excellent condition. The original black carpet was replaced, and it appears that the white vinyl was updated on the front seats. The rear seat looks to be original to the car. The dash is in excellent condition, with no visible cracks or damage. The gauges are limited to a speedometer and a fuel gauge, along with warning lights for the other critical functions. All the lights and gauges work properly. The radio has been replaced with an Oldsmobile branded cassette player, but the dash hasn't been modified at all, so the next owner can replace it with a stock unit if desired. The Cutlass Convertible has factory air conditioning , the air conditioning and heat functions all work perfectly, making this a capable all-season cruiser.
