Chrysler was in trouble in the 1970s. Years of mismanagement, poor quality, and increased competition from Japan put Chrysler on the financial brink. In a moment of brilliance, Chrysler hired Lee Iacocca who was able to secure a loan from the US Government and single transformed Chrysler's fortune with the K-Car. The premise was simple: build quality vehicles, with as much visual difference while sharing as many components as possible under the skin. A modern, transverse front-wheel-drive layout maximized interior space, allowing space for American consumers while providing the efficiency of Japanese and European rivals. The resulting car started as a small sedan and would come to encompass a station wagon, a convertible, a sports coupe, and the minivan. Quality was apparent, with no major recalls. Within 2 years, the K car and its variants composed 50% of Chrysler sales. Over 3.5 Million K cars were produced from 1981 - 1989, saving the Chrysler corporation and going into the history books as one of the most important automotive platforms of the 20th century. Despite the huge production numbers, it is believed that there are only 30k K-Cars remaining on the road in the US, half of which are convertibles. Early, high-content examples are exceptionally rare.
