Description
1974 Pontiac Grand Safari wagon. This was the top-of-the-line wagon. Don’t confuse this wagon with a trimmed down Catalina Safari.
It could be ordered with or without faux woodside trim. These cars were used up as they reached the ten-year-old mark by rough living and then as demolition cars, so the ones that remain today are very scarce. This car was delivered in Leesville, South Carolina when new and stayed in the area its entire life. This is a rust-free solid car. No frame, floorboard or body rust.
I bought this car January of 2008 at 77,284 miles. It was repainted with factory color in PPG base with top-of-the-line PPG (#2021 clear) as I knew we were going to use it and it would be in the weather at times. Paint is NOT show car concourse paint. It was never meant to be. Chrome is fair (driver worn) anodized window trim chrome is poor. I have won trophies with this car several times. That was not what I intended, but it’s nice. My son talked me into putting a “Trans Am” style shaker on the engine that sticks up though the hood. I didn't think I would like it, but it makes it look cool. When car is not in use, it is either under cover or garaged and not left outside in elements.
I have done repairs as needed. I did preventive items like change timing chain to a double roller (2008) as it had plastic cam gear. The gear had not lost any plastic teeth before I changed it. No plastic pieces in oil pan. I serviced the transmission several times and added a trailer tow shift kit and trans cooler from day one. Replaced rear springs with new ones (Eaton factory with added leaf). I have done oil changes every 3K miles, tune ups, one carb rebuild, new radiator, water pump, coolant changes, hoses, brake master cyl, dual exhaust (1974 is last year before Catalytic converters) and alternator over the years. New rear brakes and wheel cyls, front pads. It stops great for almost 3 tons of car. I saw an advertisement for a new fuel tank (about 5 years ago) so I changed that simply because of age. When this car needed anything, it was replaced quickly. A/C was changed to a cycling system in place of POA valve. It has a rebuilt compressor, accumulator. All glass is tinted with dark shade on windshield top. It has a new windshield because of a rock hit. It has electric claim shell glass and gate both working. I installed new carpet and a better dash due to cracking in the original. The far Rear panels were covered in vinyl as the plastic was getting dry and flaking. Front seat lower had been done before I bought the car. All the rest is original along with door panels. I have lower door panel sections to replaced dried one’s on car (front) but have not had time to get them on the car. Rear door panels are great. It has new lower ball joints, and all steering is tight, this car drives like a dream. We have been up and down the east coast multiple times with this car. Replaced two rear tires this summer because of ageing, front tires are good. Tires on this car don’t wear out, they age out. It has air shocks in rear that leak down when sitting but seem to hold air when car is used. Towing rate is7,500 pounds (which was higher than the97 Chevy Suburban 6,500) we had. The car had a stereo radio from factory. It has an 8track factory radio in dash now that needs to be repaired so it is not connected.
I added over the years a tilt steering column, factory gauge cluster and a vacuum gauge in place of clock.

In closing this is a super nice driving and rare car. I am IN NO RUSH to sell the car. All reasonable offers will be considered. This car is priced between high retail and average retail. It’s not a basket case! It is ready to go now. We just drove it to Daytona, Florida and back to South Carolina without any issues. We attended the Turkey Rod Run. It was the ONLY clam Shell GM wagon there that I saw and there had to be 4,000 +cars that weekend in and around the event. Several people looking at the car during the show said the same thing (it’s the only clamshell they saw there).
