Description

A terrific, fun, and iconic example of Pontiac's limited production Catalina Super Chief of which only 7236 were manufactured.
Stored in a climate controlled warehouse over the last six years, I stumbled on it through a associate and purchased it after having spent some time reviewing its condition.
Nicely and comprehensively restored a few years back it shows very nicely with excellent paint, stainless and chrome overall with two minor exceptions.
1. Some minor bubbling to the right and left forward portions of the rear wheel wells encompassing probably a area of no more than three inches.
2. A dent and some corrosion to the outer left front bumper, and associated chip in the hood where the previous owner tagged something.
The rest of the Pontiac Super Chief shows very nicely, with very nice upholstery, carpet, tinted safety glass, headliner, dashboard and controls, etc. Rocker panels, quarters, the frame, suspension, and floors are solid and in nice condition.
Its 371 cubic inch engine has less than 500 miles on it since being rebuilt and runs flawlessly. It's rebuild (in Detroit) is a interesting story as to how it came about. You may inquire. It's fun story, reflecting on the owners obsessive compulsive nature. The engine has just been completely tuned with new cap rotor, wires, air filter, oils, fuel filter, coolant flush, new water pump, thermostat, etc, all precautionary due to the period of storage.
The Pedal Ease power brakes (drum) have been looked at and adjusted, wheel bearings cleaned and repacked, and a complete brake fluid flush.
Overall the Pontiac drives and shifts smoothly (Dual Range Hydramatic) , with no unusual noises, smoke or vibrations. The car is surprisingly very quick.
Everything functions as it should with the exception of the fuel gauge, probably a result of having sat for a number or years.
The two tone paint color is Viking Blue , on Graystone White (EYY Code), with a Trim Code of 229 of Blue Brocade cloth and vinyl trim.
Historically, this Catalina Super Chief was built a the Southgate California assembly plant, one of only 7,236 built, with a original selling price of $2880.00, expensive 56 years ago. 1958 was Pontiac's 50th Anniversary, and it was also the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car for that year.
In conclusion, this if a very nice, driver quality car with beautiful and iconic body lines, exemplifying and representing the culture and decade which is was built.
It is not concourse, but overall in excellent condition for its vintage. Very collectible and rare by virtue of its low production numbers.
I encourage prospective buyers to personally inspect the Pontiac prior to auction end. Inspections as a condition of sale after auction end will not be permitted. Please do your due diligence beforehand. The pictures cannot tell it all, although I have described it pretty well herein, and can further elaborate when you call.
Appropriately priced. Hagerty Valuations will provides a nice overview, which you may wish to consult as to the rise in value of these 50's Coupes.
