1976
Pontiac Trans Am..This is not a clone PLEASE DECODE VIN NUMBER AND DATA TAG
This is an original 1976 Trans Am I purchased in 1997. It’s a matching numbers car in carousel red with a buckskin interior. Build in August 1975 with a June engine code it’s #476 one of the first 500 factory initial plant builds. As part of initial build issues this car built with an auto transmission, but never charged/identified on the window sticker. This is a base level Trans Am with two major options the bird and A/C. It came from Southern Pines NC and comes with all the dealership information, original window sticker, owner's manual, warranty information and a pack of dealership advertisement matches. I kept the car as original and untouched from the factory as possible. I purchased the car 21 years ago and at that time it had around 98k miles on it and now it has 102,353 miles. The car sat for many years due to the paint job, kids and building a house.
The following is information or what I did over the 21 years of ownership:
Front seats were resewn in the factory correct dye lot material to match the original buckskin rear seats.
Carpet was replaced in the correct dark saddle color.
Dash pad in perfect condition still soft almost like day one.
Trunk has original floor mat, collapsible spare tire and inflator can. All trunk spatter paint left in place as applied from the factory.
Car was professionally painted only the exterior outer panels were repainted leaving the factory paint process untouched in the engine compartment, doors and deck lid leaving the original stickers still in place.
Original windshield and rear hood seals are in perfect soft condition along with the original fiber air inlet tube from air cleaner to fender.
Replaced upper/lower control arm bushings, ball joints, tie rods ends and brakes hoses. (As an FYI, to understand rust free all these repairs were done with a hand wrench even brake pipe nuts were finger loose on the pipes).
Replaced tires with BF Goodrich TA Radials in the correct factory size.
Installed KYB shocks for better handling.
Rear springs were re-arched.
400 cu.in. engine was rebuilt 25 years ago. From what I understand from the prior owner, the rebuild included a Ram III cam or close too. Turbo 350 transmission had recently been rebuilt back to factory specs shift/feel and a new B&M torque 2100 converter installed.
Installed Ram III exhaust manifolds (original manifolds available) attached to a custom factory looking exhaust system with a transverse Magnaflow muffler and tips.
Rear axle ratio was changed from a 2:41 to a 3:42 about 15 years ago.
Gas tank was removed cleaned and a new tank unit installed.
8 track tape still plays I sent it out for a cleaning, but may still eat a tape.
Have all the service information including the 1975 chassis manual (no 76 manual printed) and 1976 supplement chassis manual along with the Fisher Body service manuals. Have almost all the bills along with a DVD of the paint restoration work that was done. If wanted, car comes with multiple first and second place trophies.
A/C does not work system has been closed probably works always cruised with the windows.
Please ask questions and if possible come and inspect car before purchase.
Againthis car was left original as can be it’s a nice survivor. Great driver, but car can experience some hesitation issues on high temperature days when running on ethanol added fuels.
Trans Am is located in Kimball Michigan.
