Description
Great driver 912E with just over 1K miles on rebuilt engine and transmission. Engine was rebuilt with Raby Aircooled Technology's engine kits at a cost over $6500. During which time the transmission was rebuilt as well ($3000). I have owned this car for This car drives great on the little 4 cylinder engine, getting around 30 mpg. There is not a day that I drive this car that someone doesn't make comments about it.
A little history:
Car was last painted in 2003. There are some spots that I have used Dr Colorchip to prevent rust damage where the paint was scratched or chipped. For showroom finish it would need another spray in the next few years.
I purchased the car from a California owner in 2009/2010 and started the 2 year rebuild (I'm military, so limited free time sometimes) in the winter of 2010. While I was rebuilding the engine and having the transmission rebuilt I replaced all rubber fuel lines on the far and treated the 22 gallon fuel tank with POR-15. North Hollywood Speedo converted my oil temp gauge to a numerically indexed oil temp and oil pressure gauge and converted the non-functional clock to a cylinder head temp and voltmeter gauge ($750). All engine cooling tins were sandblasted and powder coated to prevent rust. In fact, I have an excel spreadsheet detailing the $11,800.00+ in parts/labor I have spent on restoring this car since I purchased it. It drives wonderfully and shifts through all 5 and reverse gears without grinding. I do not drive this car in the rain and remains covered in my garage most of the time. Since the rebuild it has only used ethanol free gas and I used Brad-Penn break-in oil and since the break-in have used Joe Gibbs DT50 oil. Both of these are the high zinc (green) oil perfect for these older engine blocks.
Now for the few things that keep this from being a $35K car. The front passenger seat has a minor split in one of the seams, no rips, just the seam coming apart. There is no A/C in the car. When I purchased the car the compressor was missing and the rest of the parts were old and outdated, I just removed the rest. The Bursch muffler has a couple holes in it, these are $300 aftermarket mufflers, I just haven't replaced it because I like the sound it makes right now. All the old smog equipment is removed and I no longer have the thermal reactors, one of them was broken in half and only being held up by the exhaust being attached to the car. There are a couple of 'bubble' spots that that would need to be addressed if/when the car is repainted. As with nearly all of these old VW/Porsche engines, this one does drip a little when parked. Even so, I check the oil each time before I drive the car and have not had to add oil for this, so clearly it is minimal amount.
I have plenty of pictures of the car, even the underside if requested. I have a set of pop-out quarter windows that can be installed on the car to replace the fixed quarter windows, all the smog equipment that was removed (other than the TRs) should be available as well as a copy of the Porsche 912E shop manual. This is a great car, I love driving it and all the attention it receives. However, it is not priced for sentimental value and is fairly priced, check Hagerty car values.
