For a company like Porsche to suddenly make awater-cooled front engine and put it under the hood like everybody else was anaffront to some purists in the early 1980s but the company saw a need for agrand tourer that only Porsche could do. It was the star car in several classicbig screen hits of the 1980s, including “Weird Science,” “Risky Business,” and “Scarface,”which is also one of the reasons why the Porsche 928 became an icon and anenthusiast’s dream. This is one of 15,682 928 S4s made between 1987 and 1991.
Made in Porsche’s factory in Stuttgart, West Germanyin August 1987, this 928 is dressed in Nougat Metallic Brown (code LMV8 L40BF4). The paint and trim are in overall very good order; the bodywork isstraight and solid, with minor imperfections. The engine bay is extremely tidy and the cargo area is in above averagecondition. The body-colored, fully integrated polyurethane bumpers are in thesame shape as the rest of the body. The integrated bumpers were an unusualfeature for the time that aided the car visually and reduced its drag.
The body, styled by Wolfgang Möbius under AnatoleLapine’s guidance, was mainly composed of galvanized steel, except for thedoors, front wing, front fenders and hood were made of aluminum to make the carlighter. It had a substantial luggage area accessed via a large hatchback. Thismodel has a rear spoiler, a rear wiper and washer plus a custom alarm.
Cosmetically, the 928 S4 received rounder andbudging turn signals, auxiliary lights and foglight assemblies to modernize thefront end. At the rear, the taillights transformed into a single wraparoundlens design integrated into the rear bumper. The taillights also rest flushwith the bodywork, rather than being concave. Another unusual feature were thepop-up headlamps which were based on the units found on the Lamborghini Miura andwere integrated into the front wings.
This 928 rolls on Cooper RS3-GT radials, size225/50R16 in front and 245/50R16 in rear. Each tire is mounted to a factory andvented alloys, nicknamed the “platters.” The wheels are in good, originalcondition while the tires are in very good order.
Under the hood is a 5.0L DOHC 32-valve V-8 engine(code M28/4x). The motor had new pistons, a new cylinder head with moreaggressive camshafts and larger valves and a 10.0:1 compression ratio. Backingup the engine is a four-speed automatic transmission, which is derived from aMercedes-Benz design. For1988, the transmission featured a larger torque convertor and a stronger torquerube with a 3 mm thicker center shaft. Porscheused a Weissach Axle, a simple, passive rear-wheel steering system thatincreases stability while braking during a turn and helps achieve 50/50front/rear weight distribution, aiding the car's balance.
Driver convenience features are lengthy and include automaticclimate control, power rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel disc brakes,cruise control, sunroof, power locks, power sideview mirrors, power windows,power and heated front seats, tilt steering column, remote hatch release andrear defroster. This car also has anti-lock brakes.
Inside, the car’s brown leather interior is inoverall very good order with minor imperfections. With its front bucket seatsand pair of rear demi-buckets, the 928 qualified as a 2+2. Both rear seatscould be folded down to enlarge the luggage area and all four seats had sunvisors for occupants. The rear seats are small due to the prominenttransmission hump and are only suitable for adults on very short trips orchildren. The A/C and horn areinoperable. The carpet and headlinermatch the seat’s colors and look great. The 928 was also the first vehicle wherethe instrument cluster moved in synch with the adjustable steering wheel tomaintain maximum instrument visibility. The instrument panel and wraparoundinner door panels are in better-than average condition, as is the centerconsole and shift lever. A Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo with cassette deck and sixspeakers complete the interior.
The S4was much closer to being a truly world car than previous models as only majordifferences for North American models were instrumentation in either kilometersor miles, lighting, front and rear bumper shocks and the availability ofcatalytic converters in many other markets. Competition to this Porsche in 1988included Chevrolet’s Corvette, Ferrari’s Mondial 3.2 and Lotus’ Esprit.
