Description
Here I offer BERTHA for sale.
She is a 1998 P38 Range Rover DSE with a 2.5l straight 6 BMW Diesel engine, an automatic gearbox (High and Low Ratios) and a TOW BAR. Her bodywork is in really good condition and, as you can see from the photos, she is in a good clean and tidy condition. Her interior is good too, bearing in mind her age. The wooden piece on the end of the drivers armrest is missing (they attach with a kind of velcro) and there is delamination of the wooden 'top' on the central armrest. I have this 'top' the other way around as it has the four cupholders on the back so it doesnt bother me.
She has been well looked after whilst in my care (18 months) and she has had:
A full service in April.
A new battery this month.
The Gearbox oil and strainer were replaced this month.
A new heated front windscreen last month.
A new viscous fan last September
Both front wheel bearings replaced in April.
The o/s/f lower suspension ball joint replaced in August.
The 'leak off' pipes have all been replaced this year.
The sealing washers on the injectors have all been replaced this year.
The glow plugs have all been replaced this year.
The fuel pump was tested earlier this year and has good pressure.
She has been fitted with a 'warm start' modification (makes glow plugs come on to aid starting when engine is warm)
Bertha is a really nice car and I am reluctant to sell her. However, I now have more miles to drive to work and have bought a smart car to save money on diesel. Range Rovers are not known for their fuel economy.
Her faults:
Despite her good looks and the fact that she has been well maintained, she has got some faults.
The key
There is only one key and the 'blipper' is broken. Before I got her the previous owner had replaced the broken casing of the key and this has, in turn, fallen apart. The key opens the door and starts the engine just fine but there is no battery lid and the battery connector 'springs' have broken off. So, if you wanted to open and close the door remotely you'd need to buy a new key. This doesn't affect the alarm / immobilser. It recognises the key and works as it should.
The air conditioning.
This was re-gassed last year and worked for a couple of months. Now it is showing a 'book' icon on the display. The heating works fine but the a/c doesn't and a regass isnt going to fix it.
The Gearbox
Bertha's gearbox is old and tired. First thing in the morning (on a cold day) she sometimes doesn't go into reverse. After a couple of minutes 'warmng up' she will go in and once she is rolling she doesn't give any other problems. Also sometimes, even when warm, if you put her in park and switch her off (like when you fill up with fuel), when you come back to her she might not select any gear. Switching the engine off and back on fixes it, as does waiting a few minutes. I've also noticed that when parked and switched off the little red LEDs (which show you what gear she is in) stay lit dimly. This might drain the battery so I tend to leave her in 'D' when parked as the LED doesn't stay on if you leave her in D.
Headliner is saggy - aren't they all.
Starting
Sometimes she take quite a lot of cranking to start her but her injector pump has been checked out and is fine. I am told its just her age! Thats why I fitted the warm start kit. On a cold morning I tend to 'cycle' the glow plugs, ie I turn the ignition on and off a couple of times before I start her to get the glow plugs hotter.
Thats the honest description of her faults and I think I've covered it all. Overall Bertha is a really nice car and I am sure that with a little time and money spent on the gearbox she will give years of good service. Her engine is in good condition and her bodywork and 'underneath' are all fine. She passed her MOT with just one problem (the osf lower suspension ball joint) and the guy commented on what a good condition she was in 'underneath'. Her air suspension works as it should too, no problems there.
