Description
2006 Scion xB Rampvan handicap wheelchair accessible van - only 1 other owner!
The xB Rampvan looks like a regular car, gets 20+ MPG, and isn't limited to van-accessible parking spaces. It's a 2006 xB Rampvan with about 75,700 miles of which I added about 30,000. I've owned it for about 4 years. All equipment such as air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks, radio, CD player, power steering and rear wiper/defroster is in great shape.
It has a 50in head clearance at the tailgate with about a 6ft ramp, push/right angle hand controls, a spinner knob and 4-way driver's transfer seat which slides back and swivels to the right, inward. There is a rear door open/close button on the dash and at the rear.
The car has had regular service and oil changes and I have just replaced and upgraded much of the accessibility components - rear door struts and connections, ramp chain and bolts, and transfer seat controller and switches.
The Braun Mobility Corporation conversion consists of removing the back seat, lowering the floor behind the front seats, cutting the rear bumper and making it part of the hatch lid, and installing the ramp and its associated hardware. The rear suspension has to be raised in order to accommodate the lowered floor, so Braun replaces the xB's steel springs with air springs which allow the car to "kneel" when the ramp is in use. Operation is completely automatic -- just press a single button and the rear suspension drops, the hatch lid swings open, and the bi-fold ramp lowers. Another button closes up the xB, and there is also a remote control and additional magnetic door opener.
With the ramp deployed, head clearance is 50" under the tailgate with another 3/8" in the back seat area. Smaller adults and children will have no problem wheeling into the Rampvan. For power scooter users with limited mobility or an able-bodied companion, the xB will accommodate wheeling the scooter into the back of the xB is a lot faster and easier than using a hoist. Some users of a manual wheelchair may need to consider the incline of ramp angle. Those with upper body mobility would be able to maneuver into the driver's seat with the passenger's seat in its most forward position.
Awesome car to get and keep moving!
