Description
I became the third owner of this car in January 1987 and have always kept it in the garage when it wasn't on the road. I added power steering in 2000. Only 192 cars came from the factory with manual transmission and power steering. This is just like those other 192 cars, except it also has the Jet Streak engine.
Over the past 28+ years, whenever the car needed something, it got it. It starts, runs, and stops and does all of it well. I don't believe it needs anything and is driven every weekend, weather permitting. My trips are mostly a minimum of 20 to about 40 miles. The last time it ran on a longer trip was 95 mile round trip to the Daytona Speedway Turkey Run in 2014. Though many items were replaced or repaired some time ago, they all look or function as they did originally. The car is nice and with a few cosmetics, such as installing the replacement carpet and windlace, it would be very nice. All the chrome, stainless, paint, and rubber are still in excellent or very good condition.
I have all the titles from the previous owners as well as every receiptfor every part that I've purchased for the car, and repair I've doneexcept oil and anti freeze changes. I also have a spreadsheet showing the repair/part,mileage, and cost of everything, which I will include with the car.
The original production order shows that it was painted P5638 Mocha/Snowcap White and included the following, both standard and optional:
Back-Up Lamps
Full Wheelcovers
Cigar Lighter
Electric Clock
Climatizer and Defroster Kit W/Heating Units
The original owner added the following options:
Internally Controlled Antenna Kit
Push Button Radio
Windshield Washer Kit
Electric Fuel Pump
He also had some re-upholstery work done.
The original owner also converted the engine to the Jet Streak enginewhich Studebaker proposed but never implemented. It consisted of a dual four barrel carburetor setup borrowed from the Packard Caribbean, Iskenderian Cam, and dual point Mallory distributor. The Kit was Part # 1541800, but was not factory installed. This was also supposed to include chrome valve covers, but he didn’t add that item at that point. Instead of the Rochester carburetors that Studebaker had planned to use, he substituted Carter AFB carburetors, the same ones used on the 1958 Plymouth Fury, 1958 Dodge D-500, and 1958 DeSoto Adventurer. A magazine report from that period claimed that the Jet Streak modification would bump the horsepower up to around 330 HP. I wouldn’t know about that, but the car is very fast. In its original 275 horsepower configuration, the 3360 pounds 1956 Golden Hawk had the second highest horsepower per pound ratio exceeded only by the Chrysler 300B. I spoke to the original owner in 1994. He told me he tried to order the car with the Jet Streak configuration, but Studebaker wouldn't do it.
After I purchased the car I also replaced the following:
• Replaced the Mallory Dual Point Distributor with a Pertronix Ignitor unit
• Replaced the Mallory Transformer with a Pertronix Flame Thrower Coil
• Replaced the painted valve covers with the chrome ones
• Added Original Saginaw Power Steering with a new PS Pump and new hoses.
Other things that I’ve done to the car include:
Body/Chassis
• Deluxe AC-2799 Spoke Type Wheel Covers
• Base Coat Clear Coat Paint Job In The Original Mocha/Snowcap White Colors
• Side View Mirrors
• Hood Ornament
• Tail Light Housings and Lenses
• Check Mark Moldings
• New “Golden Hawk” Trunk Script
• Re-chromed The Bumpers
• NOS Bumper Guards
• Stainless Steel Exhaust system
• Front Brake Drums
• Wheel Cylinders
• Master Cylinder
• Hill-Holder
• Brake Hoses
• Replaced all the Steel Brake Lines
• Shock Absorbers
• New Heavy Duty Springs, Front And Rear
• Silicone (DOT 5) Brake Fluid
• Mechanical/electric Brake Light Switch (the DOT 5 Fluid caused the original style switches to fail every 10-12 months)
Interior
• (Shrock Brothers) Steering Wheel
• Replaced the lower portion of the door panels
• Converted the Clock to a Quartz Movement
• Converted the Tachometer to an all electric unit with the original look, so I no longer need the sending unit that mounts on the distributor
• NOS Light And Heater Toggle Switches and Chrome Nuts.
• New Radio Chrome Plate and knobs
• Added A Rear Seat Speaker
• Rear View Mirror
• New Sill Plates (These are showing some wear after a quarter century)
Under The Hood
• Replaced The Spark Cable Brackets With The Later Version Brackets
• Rebuilt the Generator
• New Voltage Regulator
• Rebuilt The Starter Motor
• Heavy Duty Radiator
