Description

I built this Land Cruiser up back in the late 1980s. I did a complete rebuild then with removing all the rusted body tub panels and welding in new steel parts. Then covering the complete floor with fiberglass, and then bed liner so there would never be a worry about rust again. The frame had zero rust when I bought it and is still in great shape. The engine was rebuilt back to stock specification with .015 over pistons. The transmission and transfer case were opened up and inspected by a local specialty shop and found to be in great condition with no work need. The same for the front and rear differentials. If you know FJ-40 they used the same drivetrain in trucks up to 1 1/2 ton so way overbuilt for the FJ-40.
I had planned on keeping this Land Cruiser forever, so did the work accordingly. Little things like adding a factory fuel door for the rear aux tank instead of an open filler, custom mounts, seats, boxes etc. I drove this Land Cruiser for years as a daily driver in Los Angeles (never with the top on, and most of the time with the windshield down, ahhhh So Cal weather). My son grew up with me working on it, and he loved riding in it. Anytime anyone said "nice Jeep", he was quick to correct them "It's NOT a Jeep, it's a Land Cruiser". The last photo posted is him during the rebuilding. He is 27 now, so you can see how long it has been in the family (and yes, wives are not happy when you use the patio cover to pull car parts)
Well, he grew up and joined the Marines, and while going to language school in Monterey, CA he talked his dad (me) into selling him the 'Land Cruiser'. He drove it to Texas for his secondary school and then on to Camp LeJeune, NC where he was stationed. It did not get used much there in North Carolina as he deployed a couple times overseas. When he got out of the Marines he brought it to Austin (towed behind the U-haul truck he rented to move his stuff) where he is going to school now. He is moving again out of state and hence the reason he is selling it. He just never gets much of a chance to use it and living in an apartment building, it is always a hassle having 'extra' vehicles.
I am listing it for him as I know the most about it, and I am retired so it is very easy for me to respond to any questions you might have (he works, besides going to school). It is in good condition, but it is not a showboat. Nice enough to not have to make excuses, but tough enough to take off-roading and not worry about the paint. (When I repainted it with PPG paint, I added a flattener to the paint, so it is an eggshell gloss, so much-much easier to touch up those branch pinstriping you get off-roading). He just had the carburetor rebuild as it was getting gunky from him not driving it. It starts and runs well, but probably best to put a few miles on it before driving to Nebraska. If you are 'local' it certainly is available for you to look at and test drive or have someone do that for you. About the most it needs is a headliner for the removable hardtop. He could never decide to go with a 'normal' headliner or Rhinoline it. Yup, the anti-aircraft roof hatch (handy for checking for black helicopters) was removed from a 404 Unimog. My buddy bought the cab to used to repair his 404 hardcab and I talked him out of the hatch. Also, the speedometer gear (the plastic on at the transmission connection) gave up the ghost while he has been in Austin. As he does not drive it much, perhaps 1,000 miles more than are on the odometer. He just used a GPS for a speedo. There is some body rust in the back, not too bad, but I've added photos so you can see. And as far as SMOG testing, the engine is stock but does have headers and electronic ignition, so none of the equipment from back in the 1970s like an exhaust air-pump, etc. California had a cut-off at 1975, but we lived in Humboldt County and it was exempt from smog testing being a rural county. It has a clear 'salvage branded' CALIFORNA title (I bought it from a salvage yard, but never wrecked, straight and true) and current TEXAS registration.
The winch can be mounted on the front or rear with quick change bolts and connectors. I usually keep it on the rear for better weight distribution and it makes a great step for getting in the rear doors. The rear seats are out of a JDM troop transport, so they can hold 2 per side instead of the normal 1 person, with seat belts (6 total) for everyone. There are locking boxes behind the front seats (full width, so it can hold long guns), under the driver's seat (48-hour pack size) and a locking box in the front bumper area. It has a metal toolbox that mounts under the hood, very handle for wrenching (unless it is 100° out, then the toolbox is about 140°). There is a bikini top for roof-off driving, and some spares you can see in the photos.
