I will be regretfully selling our 1972 VW beetle Baja project when we finish re-assembling it. It will need to be checked over head to tow before registering it.
This is not a perfect car by any means, but it is a great off-road platform and a solid unit that will give plenty of joy for years to come.
I purchased this car to build in the hope to head up to Cape York but with Covid and a change of heart I will no longer be doing so.
It was a fairly standard car when purchased. It had been through a restoration at some point in its life. The body had a lot of bad repair work and a bad paint job. It wasn’t an overly rusty car, the pan is in good shape and the usual spots on the body have signs of metal being added in place of rust and some average filler and paint work on top. We decided to rub it back enough to apply raptor coat to the entire body and accept the imperfections knowing it would get some damage off-roading .
The majority of the work we did was to the suspension and motor. Please read through the spec list below:
Suspension:
- standard balljoint beam with adjusters added for height
- extended travel balljoints
- country buggy beam supports
- Suzuki Jimny 2020 shock absorbers
- early steering box rebuilt with modified pitman arm to maintain steering stops
- reinforced standard tie rods with new tie rod ends, late inner and early outer
- new steering damper and Cb performance coupler
- rear suspension is adjusted for 2” lift
- z bar disconnected
- poly torsion bushes
- Suzuki Jimny rear shocks
Engine
- 1600 twin port
- chromoly pushrods with solid shaft rocker setup (0-0.003” lash as they don’t expand the same rate as standard)
- electronic SVDA distributor with MSD leads and coil
-empi bolt on valve covers
- major seals replaced and engine cleaned up.
- full exhaust system with bolt on flanges(no leaky clamps)
- engine fires and runs perfectly. Starts first time every time
Body mods:
- Tube steel front bar
- winch mounted on front beam with access through front valance
- Baja steel side steps
- rear is standard front bumper modified
- roof racks and cage
- scat pro car seats
Brakes
- standard with new slave cylinders and braided lines
Wheels are BF Goodrich 215/75/15 nut terrain KM2’s
There is still plenty to to this car as with most of them for sale. I have not attended to the wiring yet or the interior. It is clean and presentable but please know this is still a project for the right person. It was not built to win shows or to be perfect, it was purpose built to go off-road and have fun and the car was not the best candidate for any other form of restoration without spend $50k or more. To me a 1972 is just not worth the investment.
We are in lockdown at the moment so no visits or test drives. I will have it back together for viewing within a month from today.
Don’t hesitate to message.
