Memorial Day Special!
About this 1985 VW:
The owner of this VW passed away, his son brought it in to get it running since it’s been sitting 7-years. We’ve never worked on this VW before. The estimate was $4,200 +/- to get it where he could sell it, and he passed on doing it as the price was too much and he had no interest in the Vanagon. We didn't want this VW as we’re so busy with other work and didn't have the time or money to spend on repairs, but we ended up with it for $2,800. We were thinking we could do the work and pass it on to someone that would enjoy it when our time permits. We’ve hit that quote easily, and passed it up now and spent so many hours on it, not to mention money on parts, that we're deep in the hole!
Work done and parts used so far:
New Mahle pistons/rings (not Chinese), new used heads w/fresh valve job, new head gaskets, Bosch plugs, rebuilt original Bosch distributor, new Bosch cap & rotor, new used ECU, new used air-box, new belts, new gas tank, new sending unit, fuel vent tube, temp light, white GoWesty dash LED lights, new 185R 14C tires, new rear wheel cylinders, bleed brakes, rear main seal, 2-new headlights, new water pump & thermostat, rebuilt speedometer/odometer with miles set, new Interstate battery, and labor to do all the work. Front/rear wipers working, wiper fluid working, high/low beams working, horn working, AM/FM/Cassette w/iPod connection sounds great, drivers bottom seat cushion a bit worn, but both covered to look nice. Clock, dash lights, interior lights, map light all working. Canvas patched on one side, other side a bit worn - original canvas. No interior mold on pop-top, and non-smoker owned. Sink needs new pump, but clean. Fridge not working on electric. Stove all in tact but no propane to check it out. All original window seals still in great shape, no leaks, no rust at front window either. Has both front and rear tables, bug hatch screen and front curtain. Minimal rust on one seam drivers side. Clean underbody and motor. Add it all up and you’ll see why we’re shaking our heads on this one.
We really can’t stand behind this VW with any warranty or promises, so bidder should be someone that either knows VW's or has a mechanic in mind. Although we have flawless feedback everywhere, and great reviews on sites like roadhaus.com, we don’t want to risk that just to sell this, which we surely will. We’re always honest when repairing, restoring or selling a VW, it’s how we’ve been since 1992. This VW can be driven, but please keep in mind the idiosyncrasies stated below, so I don’t recommend taking a 2,000 trek around the USA quite yet. It has us stumped! We’ve done lots of work on it, but in my opinion, it’s still not 100% ready to travel the USA.We’ve done all we can do at this point as other work needs attention and bills need to be paid accordingly.
So, it’s for sale as is with no warranty. We think this VW would be perfect for a Subaru or turbo conversion, or to drive like it is, or trouble shoot whatever may remain or need work down the road, but some idiosyncrasies come and go. Every time we fixed one thing, another broke. Again, we've never worked on this VW prior to acquiring it within the last year. We’ve got it running well, but every once in a while after running nicely for days, the next day won’t start. But wait 15-minutes, it starts right up and runs fine. Engine loses power for no reason and won’t go over 35mph one day, then next day, it’s fine for for endless driving. Gremlins!!! We think that problem has been solved by replacing the ECU. This week it’s running like it should, but who knows what next week has in store for it… It could be all set or it may need some more tweaking down the road, we just can’t be certain!
***UPDATE just after this ad was placed, transmission has become hard to shift! It feels like the shift ball in the rear. Like I said, we fix one thing, another goes, and then we fix it. Almost out of things to replace at this point!!! All on a VW with under 90k miles too. Crazy.
Thanks for looking at the auction.
