Description
Original paint, all records vehicle with fastidious maintenance. Second owner in last 18 years, last owner was a retired German gentleman who owned it from 67 years old to 83! This vehicle comes with original manuals and receipts since new, including well over 100 invoices. Everything that has needed attention has had it in a timely manner.
In the last 15,000 miles it has had:
FLUIDS: five oil changes, coolant flushes, brakes, transaxle
TUNE UP: new spark plugs, new plug wire set, distributor cap and rotor, air filter
MECHANICAL: new clutch, slave cylinder, master cylinder, brake service, master cylinder, wheel cylinder, starter motor, alternator, CV joints
COOLING SYSTEM: steel engine pipes replaced in engine compartment, water pump, thermostat, temperature sensor
FUEL: gas tank removal and new grommets, vent hoses, new fuel lines, fuel rail hoses (these are pretty essential as they can spray fuel on the exhaust and cause a total vehicle loss due to fire)
EXHAUST: muffler and catalytic converter
SUSPENSION/STEERING: koni shocks, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, steering rack boots
TIRES: Yokohama LT van tires (less than 1000 mi) on rare very good condition factory 14" alloys
CAMPER PARTS: sink faucet, drinking water line, water tank cleaning, fridge servicing including scale removal from ignition manifold (the most common no start or hard start culprit when on propane)
This van drives as a Westfalia should. Solid brake pedal, accurate steering, responsive and reassuring suspension (thank you koni!), smooth shifting and unusually good power. The interior (no pets and smoke free) shows virtually no wear, no rips or holes and door panels are straight and unaltered. There is a second battery with inverter. Everything works. The gas stove knobs were taken off for my kids safety, but I have them. The van has factory alloys, an awning, bra, rear bug screen and all curtains including the cover for the skylight (which isn't cracked and doesn't leak) . The bike rack is NOT included in the sale.
The van is missing the following:
tables
fuse box cover
plastic cover for propane tank filler
The exterior is straight and shiny! It has a few small dents (largest are on drivers side above the rear wheel), scratches in the clear coat, chips on the front (especially bumper) and door edgesthe usual for a nearly 25 year old vehicle. The clear coat on the rear hatch is sun damaged and peeling. This is not a high dollar GoWesty fixer upper with the classic rock guard cover all, this is an extremely well maintained original van with NO seam rust and lots of life left!
The van currently has 172,751 miles. The odometer was replaced in 2005with a new one with a zero reading. This repair was documented in theservice manual and is confirmed by receipt for installation and over 40vehicle records in CarFax. The current reading is 26, 758 km on theodometer.
BUYING A WESTY: The value in these vans is now in the body - if you buy one, look for original paint! If it has been painted look closely at the underside, seams adjacent to the wheel arches and the lower horizontal seam a few inches up from the bottom of the vehicle on the drivers side - I've seen ads claiming a van is "rust free" that have had this seem completely covered with body filler or covered then a new "seam" ground in. Another thing to look at is the steering wheel. It gives you the best indication of vehicle mileage in the absence of complete records! The odometers are notoriously unreliable and most have been replaced or spent a portion of their lives not working before they were fixed. Van Cafe even has a service to set the mileage at whatever you want when they service a broken one! For $10! Looking at the texture on the steering wheel can give a good indication of a vanagons mileage - if the texture is consistent and present around the circumference it likely has less than 100 K miles, if the texture is minimal between the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions it likely has around 200 K miles, if it's smooth and shiny about 300 K+!
