Description
I purchased this 1978 Rabbit from the original owner in January 2014. I have the original order sheet from when he purchased it in 1977. I had kept an eye on this car for the last 15 years, and was finally able to make a move and purchase it 1.5 years ago.
Its incredible that when looking at the original order sheet from 1977, the phone number and address all matched to the location where I bought the car, meaning it has parked in the same house since new, until I purchased it, and I live only a short 5 minute walk from where the dealership used to be that sold the car new.
Unfortunately my circumstances have changed and I can no longer keep this car.
This car has always been in use, its not a rabbit that has sat for any long period of time broken down or forgotten, in fact this car has never been apart, the motor has never been apart, no one has ever installed an after market radio, or cut it up for any sort of modifications ever,
BODY :
The car does have some rust, as every german built rabbit will have unless already repaired. The rust is in the common areas. Bottom of the right A-pillar, Rear Corners on the rear arches and a little on the bottom driver side rad support. The strut towers are clean, the floors are good, the car stays DRY. All the windows are in excellent condition, there are NO LEAKS. I sprayed the whole car with White Epoxy Primer last summer because I was going to tackle repairs one section at a time and wanted to keep a uniform look. Underneath my primer is the original white paint, which has never been reapplied. The paint under my primer is all original, this car has ZERO BODY FILLER ANYWHERE, all I did was sand the car and spray. This car retains all its original body panels since new, except the hood which I replaced with another white hood. All the locks work with the same original key, all the handles work, the car has a factory external hood release. The only body alteration is the addition of a Factory VW Rood rack and addition of European headlights.
INTERIOR :
The interior on this car is bone stock, The headliner is like new, the carpet is in excellent condition, the door panels are excellent, the dashboard is in very nice condition, the rear seats look like new. The front seats have splits and will require new covers, the original radio is present and works. All the lights on the dashboard work, including the glow-plug light, all the knobs, switches, hooks are present, nothing is broken, even the cigarette lighter has never been used.
MECHANICAL :
I have driven this car 20,000 KMs in the last 8 months, I have daily driven it to and from work which is a 60km round trip, and have had ZERO PROBLEM with this car except 1 time when the downpipe on the exhaust cracked. $60 and 1 hour later it was repaired. The car shifts great, starts everytime right away with no smoke and drives very nice. I have replaced the suspension with fully height adjustable Raceland brand coilovers with all new strut mounts at 4 corners. There is a external headgasket leak which was present when I bought the car ( the motor has never been apart ) and after 20,000 kms of driving it has not gotten any worse, I top up the coolant every weekend and check the oil. I was planning on installing a 1.9L IDI motor in the future so this did not bother me, and even so, I have driven the car hundreds off miles away from home and have no issues.
BOTTOM LINE :
The bottom line is, I purchased this car as a drivable project to enjoy and work on as time goes on, and I am selling it in the same manner. This is a car that can be used everyday, you can come pick it up from me and drive it to seattle or Portland today and I have no doubt it will make the trip, but also don't forget, this car is nearing 40 years old, it has never been apart and it does not owe anyone anything. It is not perfect, it is a very nice base for an eventual restoration.
SHIPPING :
I will assist you in helping to ship the car in any way that I can. I am willing to help in shipping the car WORLDWIDE, I will drop it off at the train station, or the port, I will meet the transporter who you send to pick up the car. Please do not ask me how much it costs to ship the car to you, The car is located in Vancouver BC Canada, please inquire about shipping on your own and then rest assured that I will do what I can on my end to ensure a smooth transaction.
IMPORTATION TO THE USA :
This should be straight forward, the car is located 20 miles from the BC/WA state border crossing, I sold a MK1 to a fellow Washington state resident on eBay last year and it was very easy and straight forward.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you and HAPPY BIDDING!
