1996 T4 VW Transporter
Unfortunately I am having to sell my lovely T4 as I no longer need such a big vehicle. I bought the van just over a year ago as I am a professional drummer and needed something to cart my drums and my band around in. I wanted a transporter as I knew they were strong and reliable and I wanted something a bit cooler than your average builders van. I'll be honest, I bought the van with 150,000 miles on and was a bit nervous as that seemed a lot of miles However many of the vans I was looking at seemed to have similar or more miles and after speaking to a few people they reassured me that these vans go forever and I should easily get 250 - 300,000 miles out of that engine, especially as it is the 2.4 non turbo (more miles to the gallon, less to go wrong and very strong!) so I bought the van and they were right, it's been a great van and has cost me pennies for the year I have had it!
I bought the van with most of the work done to it, but it has been tastefully and usefully modified:
It has 5 leather seaters professional installed, the back 3 fold down and the front 2 can spin all the way round to face the back. (lap belt on the centre seat, shoulder and lap on the two sides) Inside the back wheel arches have been packed out with space for storage and there is a board which lifts up to sit on top, on which you can sleep and put stuff underneath the bed. This bed design is fantastic and I haven't seen another van with a bed like it. The rock n roll fold up beds that you usually get in these vans are great but you can't put stuff underneath while you sleep, where as with this board, I could fit my drums underneath and sleep on a blow up air bed on top! There are also cream curtains with the VW logo that go all the way around the van for when you are camping.
The van is fully carpeted and sound proofed, has 12 months MOT, and a small sub and speakers fitted under the rear seats. Just had 2 new front tyres costing £260, back ones have plenty of tread. Lowered with alloys all round, although the front ones do have quite a few scuffs. Van also has Halogen headlights, central locking on a fob and a once piece back door so you don't get wet while loading!
As I said, these engines are supposed to go forever as long as you service them every 6,000 which I have done. Having done 14,000 miles this year, the van has been fully serviced (air, oil and fuel) twice.
The van has cost me about £200 over the whole year which were the result of an old wire and a new light switch to fix my headlights. In the last month it has had an MOT and 2 new front tyres (uniroyals) so as far as I can see the only expense you should have with the van over the next 12 months will be the tax.
The not so good bits bits:
The paint work generally is a bit tatty - owner before the previous owner sprayed the van badly from red to grey and so there are some patchy areas. Never really bothered my though.
The passenger door has recently stopped working on the central locking for some reason, so you have to lock it with the key. Auto-electrician said it would be an easy and cheap fix as it is probably the motor in the door handle.
Front alloys are quite scuffed.
Sometimes the temperature light flashes on when you go round a tight bend, however the temperature gauge works so you can see that the van isn't overheating. I'm assuming this is a possible sensor fault.
The clock in the dash can't be adjusted as the dial is broken off!

Tax until 31st October 2014
Still in use so milage will go up.
I would consider part exchange on a caddy van of similar standard.
