VOLKSWAGEN THING

Found this car in a barn in southern Ohio 21 years ago. Had 45K miles on it but had been abused. Smashed front fenders, torn top, no reverse, weak engine. Owners said they used it around the farm and it had been in the barn a good 12 years or more. It was painted purple, we had body soda blasted and replaced fenders, top, side curtains , etc. Had it painted original white. Put in a Mofoco 1776 engine with hydraulic lifters, full flow oil filtering, high out put oil pump, and dual Kadron carbs. Had transaxle rebuilt by Chirco of California. Dual SS headers by The Thing Shop. We used this vehicle as a tow behind our RV. It’s been to British Columbia twice, Yellowstone 8 times and the outer banks 15 times. Not driven much locally except to a couple car shows years ago.THE GOOD: runs great no mechanical issue’s, no real rust except for some surface spots under hood and engine compartment. Top and side curtains in great shape, seat upholstery in good condition. THE BAD: There is a slight exhaust rattle, the speedo and odometer do not work. Had speedometer rebuilt 2 years ago but it still doesn’t work, bought a new cable but never put it in. Currently reads 48K miles. Probably clocked 50K miles pulling it behind the RV. Bet it has less 20K miles on motor and transmission.THE UGLY: blinkers don’t work, I’m no electrician. I have never used gas heater. Burning gas for heat over a tank full of gas creeps me out.Also never used vehicle in cold weather always garaged.My kids grew up in this vehicle on trips, so it has tons of sentimental value.
