Description

VW T5 2004 long wheel base kombi van.
This has been my summer project and like all VWs I seem to end up with, the budget was blown long ago and now it owes me too much to keep. The van is a long wheel base, it has a 174 bhp 2.5 5 cylinder diesel motor that runs like a sewing machine. The paint is metallic green and is pretty straight, the occasional blemish here and there as to be expected with an 04 van that's been used. There is a decent service record with the van it has covered 140000 miles and has a brand new tow bar that has never been used.
I had some 20" wheels but really prefer the more subtle steelies in gloss black with VW centre caps and chrome bolts, it looks nicely finished without shouting to much. The van runs continental winter tyres 245 which let it get down the road and round corners very nicely. Also helping in the corners is the H and R Spring package - no body roll but still carries the weight and gives a suple ride ( I have original springs also).
Mechanically it has been just given a full service, cost over £780, did everything. All new engine mounts £640, 2 injector seals and the others were pressure tested £440. Recent clutch before I owned it.
Moving to the interior, I wasn't a great fan of the tired looking inca pattern in the front so changed it for 2014 Timo - so much more comfortable and better to look at. Twin arm rest on drivers seat. The back was a van so I had the opening style windows put in, they are like the rest of this build, brand new been opened about twice! I was starting to get a bit carried away at this point so had a company called Accutec who if you go to car or van shows will have seen around, there work is impeccable and certainly not cheap. The whole van is dynamatted ( sound proofed) all panels, roof, floor even up under bonnet, has been extensively sound deadened. It has been boarded out with 6 mm ply and 12 mm on floor, with top end acoustic black carpet on roof and around sides and hard wearing black fitted rubber floor. There is a park distance sensors and even a reversing camera that's screen is concealed in half the rear view mirror and only activates when put in reverse. Really trick and mega useful for backing out onto busy roads.
The rear seats are professionally fitted using all original VW components, they have 3 point VW seat belts all round. There is a hidden switch wihich operates the 4 spot lights in roof and twin 12 volt sockets for phones etc just behind rear seats. The sound proofing, carpet and custom T5 Rainbow hifi with Bluetooth ( music/phone) head unit cost £3800.
This was always the base I wanted for a project as it allows for 6 people to sit with loads of leg room and put 6 mountain bikes in the back. It had to be practical during the day like a car, then a van and camper at weekends. The seats are genuine VW quick release combi bench seats and turn it back into a van in seconds. The one thing I could not deal with in my old T4 camper was the 3/4 bed that was bearly big enough for me let alone the wife who likes to sleep on my side and hers simultaneously. So for this build we made up a frame that fitted between the wheel arches and came just to the top of said wheel arches and slid a king size mattress over it. Amazing comfort and still room for cooker and cassette Loo!
I have created a great little van for daily life and it has the potential to be an epic camper - put your own spin on it now!
