Description
1956 Austin Healey BN2 4 speed
gearbox Restored in 2010 42K original miles
Up for sale is my 1956 Austin Healey 100-4 BN2. This is a very desirable 4 speed car with only 42K documented original miles. This car had a complete frame up restoration (photo documented) in 2010 on a rust-free Arizona body. This car is a matching numbers car that is in mechanically excellent condition. This is one of only 2,900 left hand drive cars imported into the US, one of 4,600 BN2’s built. This is arguably one of the most desirable production Austin Healey’s aside for the M and S variants.
According to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate (Birth Certificate), this BN2 was built on September 25, 1955, (chassis no. BN2L / 228497; engine no. 1B/228497M; Body no. 10,486). All ID plates on the car match the BMIHT certificate nos. which match the title.
Overall, the car is in very good and presentable condition which had a full body off frame up restoration completed in 2010. That restoration included bare metal respray in its original Healey Blue color and Blue leather with White piping, Blue carpets, Blue door and kick panels and Blue convertible top and tonneau cover. Everything on this car was either rebuilt or replaced as new NOS parts. The last owner then got sick and passed away in 2015 and the car sat for 6 years. I brought it back to life this year and drive it regularly. I use regular gas (non-ethanol) with 100 octane and it runs terrific.
After replacing and upgrading the parts listed below, the car now drives excellent and can be driven anywhere. It is an absolute pleasure to drive!!! The new stainless steel exhaust note, shifting and gearing, braking are just perfect. The front and rear bumpers were removed and some point in time but are attainable from Moss Motors including ever nut and bold. The stickers are removable and peel right off. The bonnet / hood is an aluminum louvered hood from a 100 M and has leather straps.
I have the original lather wrapped steering wheel, owners and workshop manuals, mostly complete original tool kit and jack, and a thick folder of service receipts and photo album documenting the restoration.
Mechanicals: This car has had a total frame up restoration including engine, gearbox, suspension, shocks, wiring, brakes and cooling system. The restoration is photo documented and supported with a thick file of invoices. This car is a strong runner and is an honest, unmolested car that apparently was well restored, maintained, garaged and well cared for by its previous owner from the past 30 years.
I have owned several 100 4’s and 100 6’s and this is by far the best one that I have personally owned. Engine and gearbox rebuilt is documented with receipts and photos. It is a very strong runner and drives really well and just steers, brakes and feels solid and tight. The 4 speed gearbox is a pleasure over the old 3 speed unit that preceded this car in the BN1.
Turn the key, hear the fuel pump hmmmm, pull the choke out and the high torque starter cranks the engine to life. Engine idles quietly and smoothly at 800 rpms which substantiates that the engine is well tuned and balanced. Oil pressure is strong at 50 psi and it revs quickly to 5500 rpms. It runs very strong with no smoke and sounds terrific. Best sounding vroom vroom sound of any car that I have owned and is not loud and annoying. The engine runs cool and doesn’t overheat.
All lights and horn work fine. Signal trafficator is missing but can be obtainable from Moss Motors. Brakes are excellent and stops quickly and in a straight line. They have all been completely rebuilt with new pads, hoses and lines.
The steering box was rebuilt as well and so its tight and handles very well. Shocks are firm and it has a factory front anti-roll bar.. Gearbox is quiet and pulls well in all 4 gears without any grinds, noises, or hesitation. Downshifting is fine and the clutch is light and a pleasure to shift up and down through all the gears. Overdrive works on 2nd and 3rd gears perfectly! You can literally drive it 60-80 mph all day long. It has a comfortable road feel at cruising speed and an incredible sounding crisp exhaust note. I’m 6 feet 2 inches and 215 lbs and I fit very comfortable with my legs straight out.
The following are recent UPGRADES and new parts/services:
· New upgraded water pump
· New High Torque starter
· New Aluminum gas tank, fuel pump, fuel lines and filters
· New chrome 48 spoke Dunlop Wheels, Michelin tires
· New tune up parts (distributor and ignition wires, cap, rotor, NGK spark plugs, oil change and oil filter)
· Stainless steel exhaust
· 100 M type steering wheel built by Michael Lempert ($850). This wheel is a work of art held in your hands, made from Brazilian Cherry with wooden dowels. The original leather wrapped Bango wheel is in great condition.
Body: Body is straight and accident free! The car was painted in 2010 in Healey Blue. Paint looks good but not perfect but is presentable with some nicks and scratches.
The frame is solid, straight and accident free and RUST FREE!!!, Trunk area surrounding gas tank is rust free and solid. There is no signs of Bondo anywhere on this car.
Front windshield glass and all chrome including front grill and chrome trim rings are original and in excellent condition. Windshield is the original laminated factory glass and is in perfect condition and folds down…
Interior: The interior in the car is very good except that the carpet is a little faded where the arm rest goes. The dash, leather seats, carpets and floor mats are all in good condition. Dash looks great with all working original gauges, buttons and knobs. Aluminum cockpit rails are in good condition with a nice tight fit. Doors close nice and drivers side lock. New convertible top, side cutrains and Tourneau cover.
Closing: This is a 66-year-old car so it is sold “AS IS” with no expressed or implied warrantee or guarantees. I am not a broker or a dealer so this is a private sale that is final. It is sold “WHERE IS” in Huntington, New York and if transported will be the cost of the buyer. Hagerty Insurance Co has an agreed upon value of $65,000. You are welcome to see and drive the car to insure 100% satisfaction.
The early cars are very sought after by collectors and car enthusiasts and are rapidly appreciating in the lower six-figures for well restored cars or excellent original low mileage cars (yeah if you can find them). This car in # 1 condition would be $125,000+ (see Hagerty Valuation tool).
I have a current valid transferrable title.
