Description
1976 Triumph Spitfire GT6 Convertible
1976 Triumph Spitfire with a complete Triumph TR6 engine, chassis and suspension conversion. The car is finished in original Java Green.
This car was purchased on Ebay in 2003 from a gentleman in California and shipped to Kansas City by the previous owner who built the car over the next 10 years. The car was completely rust-free and wearing the original Java Green paint when purchased. Once again on Ebay a rusty 1972 Triumph GT6 was acquired for the donor parts car. The GT6 engine, transmission, complete front GT6 suspension and rear GT6 Roto-Flex Independent Rear Suspension (IRS), front frame suspension mounting brackets and rear frame mounting brackets for the rear Roto-Flex Independent Rear Suspension, window vents, complete “Power Bump” Bonet and unique GT6 body braces were removed from the donor car for installation on this Spitfire convertible.
Mechanically the car is in excellent condition with less than 1,000 miles since completion of the build. The GT6 engine was bored .020 over with TR6 pistons installed. A TR6 crankshaft was acquired and turned .020. The connecting rods had new bushings installed at both ends. The head was reworked with new valves, new guides, new seals and new unleaded gas friendly exhaust valve seats installed in the head. New lifters, timing chain, sprockets, rocker arms/shaft, new water pump, fuel pump, alternator and modern high torque starter were installed. The front pully was machined with teeth for timing sensor magnetic pickup mounted on the timing cover. The original ignition distributor was removed and replaced with a “Megajolt” Full Electronic Ignition Distributorless System. The engine mounts were installed on the frame in the correct GT6 location with the correct GT engine uprights. The radiator is a new 3 core system which cools the car properly. A new complete Stainless Steel GT6 exhaust system was installed on the car. The GT6 transmission is a known weak point in these cars. The transmission in this car is a Custom Heavy Duty “J” Type Overdrive transmission built by Dave at Canley Classics located in England. It is built with Triumph Dolomite internals. The transmission was delivered to US from England for installation in this car. A new clutch was installed along with rebuilt hydraulics. All the suspension was completely rebuilt. The brakes are GT6 rebuilt front and rear brake calipers with Canley spacers for proper mounting. All the brake lines were replaced, the master cylinder was stainless steel “Re-sleeved”, stainless steel braided brake hoses were added and Silicone DOT 5 Brake Fluid was installed. The rear IRS suspension brackets were welded to the Spitfire frame. New bushings and bearings were installed at this time. The front GT6 suspension towers were mounted to the Spitfire frame. New lower trunions, ball joints, tie rod ends, poly-urethane bushings, replaced steering rack, along with Koni Shocks with GT6 springs upfront and the Spitfire springs in the rear. Included with the car is the original Spitfire spring/shocks if desired to change the front-end height. Never got around to doing that! This car will need a complete front-end alignment. This Spitfire comes with 2 complete sets of wheels/tires. The TR7 aluminum wheels with Toyo tires currently mounted on the car and the original Spitfire wheels with tires, trim rings, Triumph wheels centers and correct lug nuts.
The rust-free body on the car was stripped to the bare metal with no rust or damage found. The original Spitfire Bonet top panel was removed and the original GT6 “Power Bump” was welded at the factory points to the rust-free Spitfire lower section. Factory fit body tolerances were maintained. Gas struts were added to make opening and closing the bonet a one hand operation. The car was completely repainted in the original Java Green and is in nice condition. All the weather-stripping on the car was replaced. All the window glass removed with new gaskets, window regulators, U channel felts, inner and outer window seals and other parts installed. New chrome door handles, taillight assemblies, side market light assemblies were installed. The front and rear bumpers were completely re-chromed to better than new condition. Any stainless steel exterior trim was replaced. The only missing detail is the front Spitfire emblem on the Bonet.
The interior has been completely redone to a high British standard. The seats and door panels were recovered with new Connolly Leather Hides ordered from England and custom sewn to make new seat covers, door panels built with PVC backing instead of cardboard and center console. The seat foam was replaced with new foam. New Wilton Wool Carpet was installed over full Dyna-Mat installation on the floors. The seat belts are complete. The dash is original with correct function gauges, original steering column/wheel and dash pad. The convertible top frame was completely disassembled, rebuilt and repainted. A new “Hartz Cloth” convertible was installed. The original top “Boot” covering is with the car. The original Hardtop is also included with this Spitfire. The hardtop is properly repainted in Java Green and is in excellent condition with one exception. The is a large tear in the white headliner material. All the correct hardtop mounting hardware is included.
A large selection of additional new weather-stripping, extra paint, extra Connolly leather along with a box of various parts is included with this sale. The rear trunk “Boot” is in excellent condition along with the spare tire mounted in the trunk.
This 1976 Spitfire GT6 Convertible is a VERY NICE SPITFIRE GT 6 CONVERSION that will give you many years of enjoyment. It’s not perfect however it would take $30,000-$40,000 to along with several years of work and waiting to duplicate this Spitfire GT6 conversion.
This Spitfire is sold AS-IS with a good Tennessee Title. Since this Spitfire is over 10 years old it is being sold as “mileage exempt” for Federal Mileage Reporting purposes. I have over 140 additional pictures available for the asking as Ebay only allows 24 pictures. Let me know if you want to see the additional pictures.
This is a very nice Spitfire GT6 Conversion!
